The editorial verdict

The ownership case.

The iSkim Ultra is an ambitious answer to persistent floating debris, especially where perimeter leaves and frequent basket emptying are the central chores.

Reasons to consider it

  • Nine-litre basket
  • Dual side brushes
  • Solar and supplementary charging

Go in knowing

  • US source says the 2025 model is no longer available
  • Surface cleaning only
  • Clarification consumables cost extra

01 / THE DETAILS

A specialised cleaner with an important status change

The iSkim Ultra is a surface-skimming robot, and that distinction should anchor the entire review. It collects floating debris before it sinks; it is not a machine for scrubbing the floor or climbing the walls. Beatbot's US product page now says the 2025 Ultra is no longer available there and points buyers toward a newer iSkim. Regional stock and second-hand units can still make the Ultra relevant, but availability and support must be checked before purchase. Its original design is unusually elaborate for a skimmer, combining solar charging, a large basket, side brushes, app control and an optional clarification system. That breadth can appeal to a heavily littered pool, provided the owner understands which problems skimming can actually solve.

02 / THE DETAILS

Basket size changes the maintenance rhythm

The published nine-litre basket is one of the Ultra's clearest differentiators. More space can be useful under trees, where a small skimmer may need emptying before the afternoon's leaves have finished falling. Capacity is not the only issue, however. Long stems can bridge an opening, wet leaves can compact, and very fine material can restrict the filter long before the compartment is physically full. A fair test should assess whether collected debris remains inside during reversing and retrieval. It should also time emptying a realistic, soggy load rather than a handful of dry leaves. The one-touch release mechanism is promising if it reduces handling, but its convenience depends on how cleanly material actually leaves the basket.

03 / THE DETAILS

The case for side brushes

A skimmer can travel across open water all day while failing to collect the debris that gathers along an edge. The Ultra's dual-side brushes are intended to address that boundary problem. This is a more meaningful design question than whether a robot can move quickly in the middle of a pool. We would examine corners, curved walls, the mouth of the built-in skimmer and the space around a ladder. Wind and return jets can push leaves away just as the robot approaches, so a successful open-water demonstration says little about perimeter capture. The brushes add moving parts and surfaces to clean, too. Their benefit should be judged by fewer leaves left along the edge and fewer human interventions, not by their mere presence.

04 / THE DETAILS

Solar power is an operating condition

Beatbot lists a 24-watt panel and a 10,000mAh battery, alongside supplementary charging. Solar assistance can make a skimmer convenient because the machine spends its working day at the surface. It cannot guarantee uninterrupted cleaning in every pool or season. A pool shaded by a house in the morning and mature trees in the afternoon may provide much less usable sunlight than an open demonstration site. Leaves or residue on the panel also change conditions. Evaluate the pool's actual sun exposure through the season, then ask what the charging routine looks like during several overcast days. Advertised around-the-clock operation should be read as an outcome under suitable conditions, not a promise that the owner will never connect a charger.

05 / THE DETAILS

Navigation must contend with moving water

The Ultra's sensor suite and planned route are intended to make surface coverage more deliberate than random wandering. Floating robots nevertheless operate in a moving environment. Wind, circulation jets and the attraction of a fixed skimmer can alter the path. The right test is not simply whether the robot avoids a wall, but whether it escapes an awkward current and returns to productive collection. Observe it while the pool pump runs in its ordinary configuration. A robot that works well only with circulation turned off may impose an inconvenient tradeoff. Pool covers, floating toys and a second cleaner's cable introduce additional obstacles; do not assume that two independently capable robots can operate together without considering how their paths and hardware interact.

06 / THE DETAILS

App control and the optional chemistry feature

The manufacturer describes app control, scheduling and voice updates, useful tools for bringing a surface robot toward an accessible edge. The clarification system should be treated separately from the physical collection mechanism. Its consumable is an additional ownership cost and does not relieve the owner of normal water testing or treatment. We do not assume that a natural-origin ingredient is universally appropriate for every pool treatment programme. Follow the product instructions and the advice relevant to the pool's equipment. Connectivity also deserves a practical check at the far end of the water, where a house's wireless signal may be weakest. A feature that works beside the router but not at the pool offers little everyday value.

07 / THE DETAILS

Cleaning the cleaner

The Ultra's basket, brushes, moving intake components and panel all require inspection. Fine debris can collect where an owner cannot see it from above, so routine cleaning should include the accessible underside according to the manual. Remove the robot before swimming and keep its working area clear of loose items that could be drawn into moving parts. After severe weather, remove large branches manually rather than asking the machine to process objects outside its normal role. In a seasonal climate, plan dry storage and follow the battery-care instructions. A skimmer that spends long hours outdoors experiences a different exposure pattern from a floor robot used for a few short sessions, making materials, seals and spare-parts availability especially relevant over time.

Buying an older model intelligently

Because the US page directs shoppers to a successor, an Ultra discount should be evaluated against replacement-part availability and the remaining support route. Ask specifically about baskets, brushes, charging hardware, batteries and clarification consumables. A used machine should be demonstrated on water, with charging and app transfer included, not merely switched on on a patio. Check whether the seller can remove it from any account association and provide the original charger. The larger basket and edge-cleaning hardware may still justify choosing this model for the right pool. They should not justify paying a premium merely because it once occupied the top of the range. A current, simpler skimmer may offer a better ownership path if its smaller feature set already covers the problem.

Our research conclusion

The iSkim Ultra is an ambitious answer to persistent floating debris, especially where perimeter leaves and frequent basket emptying are the central chores. It is a poor substitute for a submerged cleaner and an uncertain purchase if its discontinued status leaves local service unclear. We have not measured edge pickup, solar balance or autonomous recovery in a pool. A useful trial would track the amount reaching the fixed skimmer and floor with the robot active and inactive under comparable conditions, while recording every rescue and basket emptying. That would reveal whether the extra mechanism saves meaningful work. Until then, its large basket and thoughtful collection features are reasons to investigate, with availability and maintenance carrying equal weight.
