The editorial verdict

The ownership case.

The SE Plus is an appealing candidate when the main chore is floating debris and the owner values a straightforward control scheme with charging flexibility.

Reasons to consider it

  • Solar plus adapter charging
  • Handheld remote
  • Top-access basket

Go in knowing

  • Does not clean the floor
  • Currents and skimmer mouths can affect travel

01 / THE DETAILS

The simple skimmer argument

The Betta SE Plus has a clear purpose: collect floating debris while it is still on the surface. It uses solar charging with an AC charging alternative, a removable basket and a handheld remote. That combination is appealing because the robot's routine can remain relatively understandable. It is not a floor vacuum, waterline scrubber or replacement for the pool's fixed circulation system. Its best fit is a pool where leaves, insects and other floating material are the persistent nuisance. The Plus's supplementary charging is particularly relevant when sunshine is inconsistent. This review evaluates the documented design and its ownership implications; it does not report a season of measured collection performance or establish a reliability rate from online enthusiasm.

02 / THE DETAILS

Solar with a backup changes the risk

A solar-only device asks the owner to trust the site's light conditions. The SE Plus's adapter option creates an alternative when several shaded or cloudy days reduce available energy. That is a practical advantage even if the adapter is rarely used. It means the machine need not be chosen solely for the sunniest possible pool. Nevertheless, the charging routine still matters: identify where the robot will be removed, dried and charged according to the instructions. Manufacturer claims of long operation on a charge are conditional on the test and operating mode. A shaded pool under the very trees producing the debris can be an awkward combination, making supplementary charging more important than an idealised around-the-clock headline suggests.

03 / THE DETAILS

The intake has to keep what it catches

A surface robot succeeds when material enters the basket and remains there through turns, pauses and retrieval. Watch those transitions during a trial. A leaf captured in open water may escape again if the basket is overloaded or the robot is handled carelessly. The SE Plus's fine-mesh basket is designed for floating material, but mesh specifications do not imply removal of dissolved contamination or every microscopic particle. Long stems and clumps of wet leaves may create a blockage before the basket appears full. Emptying a realistic load is therefore part of the evaluation. Check whether you can reach the top handle comfortably from your coping and rinse the basket without returning its contents to the water.

04 / THE DETAILS

Navigation takes place in a current

Betta describes ultrasonic obstacle sensing and a shallow-water safeguard. Those are relevant to walls and features, but the robot must also contend with wind and the pool's own return jets. A fixed skimmer opening may attract the robot toward a location where it spends unproductive time. An attached spa, ladder or low shelf can create another awkward boundary. Observe the machine while the circulation pump runs normally rather than changing the pool to flatter the demonstration. Remote steering can help resolve a local problem, but frequent rescue would change the ownership proposition. The aim is not simply a robot that can be driven out of trouble; it is one that seldom requires the owner to do so during ordinary conditions.

05 / THE DETAILS

A remote can be more useful than another app

A handheld remote offers a direct way to bring the SE Plus toward the edge or steer it toward a missed cluster of leaves. It avoids making every interaction depend on a phone account, although the remote itself needs to be stored and maintained. Check its practical operating range from the places where you normally sit or stand. A control that works only from one side of a large pool may still be useful, but it should not be assumed to provide effortless whole-pool access. Keep it away from the water as instructed and make sure everyone who helps with pool care knows the basic controls. Simplicity is valuable when it makes a shared household routine easier to sustain.

06 / THE DETAILS

The compatibility questions worth asking

Confirm the minimum operating depth, pool type and any restrictions for infinity edges, unusual overflow designs or shallow shelves against the current manual. The phrase salt-chlorine-tolerant motors should not be read as permission to ignore the manufacturer's operating-water limits. A skimmer also shares space with covers, toys, floating dispensers and sometimes a corded cleaner. Those interactions deserve attention. If the robot catches another device's cable or becomes trapped beneath a cover edge, the problem is not solved by noting that each product works alone. Plan when different equipment will operate and remove the skimmer before swimming. Compatibility includes the entire pool environment, not just whether the pool is labelled above-ground or in-ground.

07 / THE DETAILS

Keeping outdoor hardware healthy

Inspect and clean the solar panel, basket and accessible moving parts as directed. Dust on a panel, debris around propulsion components and a packed basket can all reduce productive operation. Remove large branches manually after a storm. Store the robot according to its battery and environmental requirements when the pool closes rather than assuming a water-resistant device can remain outdoors through freezing weather. Before buying, identify the replacement basket, charger and available service route. The source's warranty language should be checked for your location and seller. We have not verified long-term seal performance or battery longevity, so claims that this is a buy-once solution for many carefree seasons would exceed the evidence available here.

What owner stories can usefully tell you

Community discussions about surface robots often focus on dramatic baskets of collected debris. Those pictures establish that a machine captured something, but they do not measure the amount that would otherwise have reached the fixed skimmer or settled on the floor. More useful owner information includes the pool shape, wind exposure, return-jet arrangement and frequency of manual rescue. In the Reddit discussion linked with this review, users describe different experiences around currents and retrieval. These are individual accounts, not a representative survey or a reliability statistic. They help identify conditions to test in your pool. They should not be copied into a universal verdict that the SE Plus is either faultless or unsuitable for everyone.

09 / THE DETAILS

Our practical verdict

The SE Plus is an appealing candidate when the main chore is floating debris and the owner values a straightforward control scheme with charging flexibility. Aiper's connected skimmers may suit someone who specifically wants app schedules, while a larger-basket design may be preferable under heavy leaf fall. If settled sand is the main issue, buy the appropriate submerged cleaner first. Our untested questions concern current handling, basket retention, solar balance and retrieval from the reader's particular edge. A useful trial should count interventions across several ordinary days and include a realistic leaf load. The design offers a sensible route to less netting, provided the pool's geometry and sunlight allow it to spend most of its time collecting rather than waiting or escaping.
