A rating from our own use of the product, weighed against its documentation and price.

Features & capability 30%8.5

Self-adjusting suction, strong pet-hair pickup on my floors and a battery that covers my whole home. Dyson still edges it on deep carpet in outside testing.

Compatibility & connectivity 20%8.6

Moves between vinyl, rugs and carpet without me changing settings; folding wand reaches under furniture.

Ownership & upkeep 20%7.8

Bin emptying is fiddly and pre-filters need regular rinsing. Removable battery and a five-year Canadian warranty help; some owners report battery fade.

Setup & everyday use 15%8.8

Grab-and-go with no modes to manage and no trigger to hold. Weight is the main drawback.

Documentation & support clarity 15%8.0

Specs are clear, though the 70-minute claim is an Eco handheld figure that the listing headline does not explain.

The editorial verdict

From a tech standpoint.

The PowerDetect just works. It handles cat hair, rugs and hard floors without me thinking about settings, and one charge covers my entire two-storey split-level with battery to spare. The bin is a bit annoying to empty and it is not a light stick, but those are small prices for a vacuum I actually reach for. At full price it faces stiff competition; on sale or from Amazon Warehouse, it is an easy recommendation.

Reasons to consider it

  • Picks up cat hair from rugs and floors without trouble in my home
  • One charge cleans my whole two-storey split-level with room to spare
  • Adjusts suction on its own, so I never fiddle with settings
  • Good value bought used through Amazon Warehouse

Go in knowing

  • Emptying the bin is fiddly and a little annoying
  • At about 3.7 kg (Shark figure) it is heavier than slim sticks
  • New price in Canada ($599.99 at Shark and Amazon.ca) is steep next to sale prices
  • Some owners report shorter battery life after a year or two; mine has held up so far

Why this is the stick I reach for

I bought the Shark PowerDetect Cordless (model IP1251C) used from Amazon Warehouse in September 2025. It was listed as "Used - Mint" and cost $380.45 before tax, well under the $599.99 Shark and Amazon.ca charge new. Shark didn't supply it and hasn't seen this review.

A year later, it's the best stick vacuum I've owned. The short version is that it just works. I grab it, clean, put it back, and don't think about it. That sounds like faint praise, but after living with vacuums that need babysitting, it's the highest compliment I can give one.

Cat hair and mixed floors

We have a cat, and the PowerDetect picks up the hair on our rugs and floors with no issues. I don't find myself going back over the same patch, and I haven't had to cut hair off the roller.

My home is mostly vinyl plank with area rugs and some carpet, and the floor head moves between them without me changing anything. Shark's "Detect" features are the reason: the head senses the floor type, edges and how dirty a patch is, and adjusts suction on its own. The LED lights on the front, which you can see glowing in my video, make it easier to spot crumbs along baseboards.

Outside testing lines up with my experience on hard floors and pet hair. RTINGS, which tested the US version (IP1251), rated it well on bare floors and pet hair, though it found the Dyson Gen5detect picked up more from carpet and crevices.

Battery: a whole house on one charge

This is the part that surprised me. One charge does my entire two-storey split-level home, with room to spare. I never have to stop halfway and wait for it to recharge.

Shark claims up to 70 minutes, but that figure is measured at the handheld in Eco mode, so real-world runtime with the floor head on carpet is lower. TechRadar measured about 67 minutes in Eco and 14 minutes in Boost on the docked sibling model. Owners in r/VacuumCleaners report anywhere from about 30 minutes to an hour of heavy use, and a few say runtime dropped after a year or two. Mine hasn't noticeably faded yet, but battery wear is the thing I'd watch long-term. The good news is that the battery is removable and Shark Canada lists a five-year limited warranty.

The bin is the annoying part

My one real gripe is emptying the bin. It's a bit fiddly and not as clean as I'd like. It isn't the end of the world, and I'd still buy it again, but it's the one moment in the routine that feels unfinished. RTINGS calls manual emptying messy too.

If that bothers you more than it bothers me, Shark sells the same vacuum with an auto-empty base as the PowerDetect Clean & Empty (IP3251C, $749.99). Be aware that owners on Reddit describe that base as bagless with several filters to clean, so it trades one chore for another.

The filters need attention either way. The PowerDetect has washable foam and felt filters before the motor and a HEPA filter after it. A recurring complaint from owners is suction dropping when the pre-filters clog, so rinse them regularly and let them dry fully.

Weight and handling

At 3.68 kg by Shark's figure, it isn't a featherweight. It's fine for a whole-house clean, and the folding Flex Wand helps you get under furniture without bending, but if you want something you can hold overhead for cobwebs all afternoon, a slimmer stick will be kinder on your wrist. It runs on a power button rather than a trigger you have to hold, which owners coming from Dyson often appreciate.

Stick vacuum or robot?

I also run a budget robot, the Dreame D20 Air Plus (Dreame D20 Air Plus review). The two do different jobs. The robot keeps hard floors tidy day to day, but it struggles with rug edges and leaves crumbs behind. The Shark is what I use for a proper clean and for anything the robot misses. If you can only buy one and you have pets or rugs, I'd start with a good stick.

Which PowerDetect to buy in Canada

Shark sells several PowerDetect sticks with similar names, so check the model number before you buy. The IP1251C is the stick on its own, which is what I own. The IP3251C, sold as PowerDetect Clean & Empty, is the same family bundled with the auto-empty base and lists for $749.99. The cheaper PowerDetect Speed (IA1241C) is a different, lighter design with a smaller 0.5 qt cup and a shorter 60-minute runtime claim.

When I checked in October 2026, Best Buy Canada didn't list the IP1251C at all, only the docked IP3251C, and Canadian Tire and Costco.ca didn't carry it either. Shark Canada and Amazon.ca are the main places to buy it new.

Keeping it working well

Most of the complaints I found from other owners come down to maintenance, so a few habits go a long way. Rinse the foam and felt pre-filters every month or so and let them dry completely before putting them back. Clogged pre-filters are the most common reason owners report a drop in suction.

Empty the bin over a garbage bag rather than an open bin to keep the dust contained, and check the floor head for string or debris wrapped around the rollers now and then. If the vacuum shuts off with flashing icons, owners in r/VacuumCleaners point to the battery or overheating, so clean the filters and the battery contacts before assuming the worst, and use the warranty if it keeps happening.

If you buy from Amazon Warehouse like I did, read the condition notes, keep the packaging until you have tried it on every floor, and note the return window. Mine closed about a month after delivery.

09 / THE DETAILS

Value, and who should buy it

At $599.99 new, the PowerDetect sits close to the Dyson V8 and below the Dyson V10 and V11 at Canadian retailers, and the competition at that price is real. Where it shines is on sale or bought used. Amazon Warehouse listings are worth checking. I got mine for about $220 under the new price, in mint condition.

Buy it if you have pets, mixed floors and a house big enough that battery matters. Skip it if you want the lightest possible stick or hate emptying bins, in which case look at the docked version or a bagged vacuum.

Questions before checkout.

Is the Shark PowerDetect good for cat hair?

In my home, yes. It picks up cat hair from rugs and floors without issues, and I haven't had hair wrap around the roller.

How long does the battery last?

One charge cleans my whole two-storey split-level home with room to spare. Shark claims up to 70 minutes, measured in Eco mode at the handheld, so expect less on carpet.

Does the IP1251C come with an auto-empty dock?

No. The dock comes with the IP3251C Clean & Empty bundle. The IP1251C is the stick only.

Is buying it used from Amazon Warehouse worth it?

It was for me. Mine was listed as Used - Mint and arrived in great shape for about $220 under the new price. Check the condition notes and return window before buying.
