How I picked these
One stick on this page has been through my house: the Shark PowerDetect IP1251C, which I've used for about a year in a two-storey split-level with vinyl plank, rugs, some carpet and a cat that sheds. Everything else is research. That means outside testing from RTINGS, Vacuum Wars and Tom's Guide, what owners keep reporting in r/VacuumCleaners, and Canadian prices I checked at Shark Canada, Amazon.ca, Best Buy Canada, Costco.ca and Canadian Tire in October 2026. Prices are before tax, and a few are sales that end soon.
Best all-rounder: Shark PowerDetect (IP1251C)
This is my main vacuum. One charge does my whole split-level with battery to spare, it picks up cat hair from rugs and floors without me going back over patches, and it adjusts suction on its own as it moves from vinyl to carpet. It runs on a power button, not a trigger you hold down. The bin is the weak spot: emptying it is fiddly and not as clean as I'd like. And at 3.68 kg by Shark's figure, it isn't light. My full hands-on review is at Shark PowerDetect Cordless Stick Vacuum (IP1251C) review.
Outside testing is a bit more mixed than my experience. RTINGS, which tested the US IP1251, got about 78 minutes on the lowest setting and about 14 on the highest, with a recharge of more than six hours. It put bare-floor and carpet pickup ahead of Shark's cheaper PowerPro Flex, but scored pet hair 7.5 out of 10 against 9.5 for the PowerPro. Vacuum Wars ranks the docked version, the PowerDetect Clean and Empty, third of the more than 110 cordless models it has tested, behind two Dysons. Tom's Guide names that docked version its best stick, while warning it's top-heavy and loud when it empties.
It's $599.99 at Shark Canada and Amazon.ca (sold by Amazon.ca), and the Clean & Empty bundle (IP3251C) is $749.99 at Shark Canada. Shark Canada lists a five-year limited warranty. I paid $380.45 for mine used through Amazon Warehouse, and that's how I'd buy it again.
Best cleaning performance: Dyson V15 Detect
RTINGS calls the V15 Detect the best cordless it has tested, with strong pickup on bare floors and carpet, outstanding pet-hair pickup and near-perfect filtration. Vacuum Wars has it at number one too, leading its carpet deep-clean and hard-floor tests.
The catches are real. RTINGS got 75 minutes on low but only 8 on the highest setting, found the dirt compartment small, and says it can get stuck on shag rugs and throws a dust cloud when you empty it. A recurring complaint in r/VacuumCleaners and r/dyson is the trigger you have to hold the whole time, and several owners report V15s dying somewhere around the two-to-three-year mark.
It was $849.99 on sale at Canadian Tire (regularly $999.99) and $999.99 at Best Buy Canada, which also had a refurbished V15 Detect in excellent condition for $699.99. Want lighter? Costco.ca had the V12 Detect Slim at $649.99 on sale. RTINGS found it easier to handle but a clear step down on carpet and pet hair, and its Amazon.ca listing says it runs on a power button instead of a trigger.
Best for pet hair on a budget: Shark PowerPro Flex Pet Plus (IZ387H)
This is the surprise of the list. RTINGS names the PowerPro Flex Reveal Plus its best mid-range cordless for pet hair, with a 9.5 pet-hair score that matches the V15 Detect, and lists the PowerPro Flex Pet Plus (IZ387H) as a variant of it. Costco.ca had the IZ387H for $299.99.
RTINGS got 56 minutes on low and almost 17 on high, a recharge under three hours, a bin of about 0.65 L (more than double the Miele below) and HEPA filtration. The trade-offs: it doesn't feel as solidly built, long hair can still wrap the roller, and opening the bin releases a bigger dust cloud than the Miele. Shark claims up to 50 minutes.
Best built, longest warranty: Miele Duoflex HX1
If you're tired of sticks that crack or die after two years, this is the cordless that r/VacuumCleaners regulars keep pointing to. RTINGS rates it its best upper mid-range cordless: a sturdier build than the Dyson, outstanding pet-hair pickup and a cleaner bin-emptying process than most. Costco.ca had it for $499.99 until October 15 (regularly $649.99) with a six-year parts and labour warranty, the longest I found.
RTINGS' downsides: fine debris takes a couple of passes, suction is weak in cracks, the bin is small, and a full recharge takes more than three hours. At 3.25 kg it's heavier than the V15, though most of the weight sits low rather than in your hand.
Budget pick: Levoit LVAC-200
Vacuum Wars calls the LVAC-200 its best-value cordless, and Amazon.ca had it for $193.56, sold by Amazon.ca. Know what you're getting: Levoit claims about 30 minutes with the floor head and 12 on turbo, which suits an apartment or condo, not a two-storey house. The upside is that Amazon.ca sells Levoit's replacement battery for $89.99, so a tired battery doesn't mean a new vacuum.
The ones I'd skip or wait on
The Shark Stratos (IZ862HC, $499.99 at Amazon.ca) is RTINGS' best mid-range pick and fourth at Vacuum Wars, but RTINGS found it heavy at almost 4 kg with a nearly four-hour recharge, and its odour neutralizer can smell strong. Samsung's Bespoke Jet AI with its emptying station was $719.97 at Best Buy Canada; RTINGS says the pricier Bespoke AI Jet Ultra performs worse overall than the V15 and drains its battery much faster, though it credits the dock with fixing the dusty-bin problem.
I'd skip Tineco for now. RTINGS dropped the Pure One S11 from its picks as discontinued, and several owners in r/VacuumCleaners describe charging failures, discontinued filters and slow warranty help. Dreame's Z-series sticks are on Amazon.ca from about $266 to $330, but I couldn't find RTINGS or Vacuum Wars results for them, and Tom's Guide's Roborock H60 Hub Ultra wasn't for sale at Amazon.ca or Best Buy Canada when I checked, only its accessories.
Battery, bins and weight matter more than suction
Every runtime on the box is a low-power number. RTINGS suggests 60-plus minutes at the lowest setting for an apartment or small home, and on their highest settings the sticks in this guide lasted roughly 8 to 17 minutes in its runs. Mine covers my whole house without me touching the settings, but if your home is mostly carpet, expect less and look for a swappable battery.
Batteries are the part that wears out. The most common complaint in r/VacuumCleaners is a stick that fades or dies two to three years in, and several owners say a third-party pack brought theirs back. In Canada, I couldn't find an official PowerDetect battery at Shark Canada or Amazon.ca; Amazon.ca had third-party packs listing the XBATR640 part for about $81 to $127, and third-party Dyson V11/V15 click-in packs for about $69 to $160. Use the warranty before any of that.
Almost every bagless stick puffs dust when you empty it, RTINGS says, so do it outside or deep inside a garbage bag. If the bin bugs you as much as it bugs me, look at a dock. Owners who switched to Shark or Samsung emptying stations mostly call it the best part of the vacuum, but the dock has its own bin and filters to look after.
Weight-wise, RTINGS puts the V15 at 2.93 kg and the PowerDetect at 3.70 kg, though only about 2 kg of the Shark sits in your hand. If you have stairs or sore wrists, hold one in a store first. And buy where returns are easy: Costco Canada's posted policy puts a 90-day limit on a list of electronics that doesn't name vacuums, which is why owners in r/VacuumCleaners, Canadians among them, talk about taking failed Dysons back there. For refurbished units, our open-box guide covers what to check: open box refurbished tech canada.
From a tech standpoint.
For most Canadian homes with pets and mixed floors, the Shark PowerDetect is the stick I'd buy again, ideally on sale or used. It doesn't top the outside test charts, but it does a whole house on one charge without fuss. If raw cleaning performance matters most and you can live with a trigger and a small bin, the Dyson V15 Detect is the top-rated stick here in outside testing, and $849.99 is the price to wait for.
If pet hair is the main problem and money is tight, the $299.99 Shark PowerPro Flex Pet Plus at Costco is the smart buy. If you want a stick built to last, the Miele Duoflex HX1 with a six-year warranty is the safest long-term bet. In a small apartment, the $194 Levoit is plenty. Whatever you pick, the battery is the real cost of ownership, so favour a removable one and a long Canadian warranty over a bigger suction number.
