The WH-1000XM4 remains interesting because its foldable shape and broad connection choices solve ordinary problems. Someone carrying headphones between meetings may value the packed size more than the newest processing label. That is a legitimate reason to consider the older design. It is not a reason to overlook the age of its battery, cushions or moving parts. The machine being purchased is the individual pair in the listing, not the immaculate example in a launch photograph.

A sensible shortlist begins with complete units from sellers who allow meaningful inspection. Ask for photographs of the inner headband, both hinges, the ear pads and the charging socket. Missing accessories should reduce the value of the offer. Before relying on the headphones for work, reproduce your own sequence rather than assuming the word multipoint guarantees a seamless handoff in every application.

Start with ordinary playback, answer a phone call, end it and resume the laptop session. Then repeat after putting the computer to sleep. Note whether you need to intervene. Codec availability and simultaneous-connection behaviour should be checked in the current manual and software, particularly if high-quality wireless modes are a purchase priority. For simple listening, a stable default connection can be more valuable than a theoretically richer mode that drops out in a crowded environment. The analogue cable gives this design a second useful role

A detachable stereo cable and documented passive operation give the XM4 a route around a depleted battery or an inconvenient Bluetooth source. Sony's published music limit is 30 hours with cancellation enabled, with a longer figure when it is disabled. That is useful for comparing intended operating modes, but an older battery may no longer approach the original claim. A short seller demonstration cannot establish a full day's endurance. Ask for a return period that allows ordinary use and make a simple record of charging and listening rather than trusting a single percentage reading.

Pads and headband coverings are another part of the budget. Flaking material is visible; compressed foam can be less obvious and may change the fit before it looks badly worn. Confirm the availability and price of appropriate replacement parts in Canada or the United States. A remarkably cheap pair can become expensive once a case, cable, cushions and service are added. It is a weaker choice for someone who needs a guaranteed untouched battery or intends to purchase unseen without a return option. Those buyers may gain more from a simpler new product with clear regional support than from a prestigious older model.

Check calls independently from music, and check the actual laptop rather than a seller's phone. Keep the receipt and confirm whether any remaining warranty transfers.
