It's not a rumour anymore: the iPhone Duo is out today
For years the foldable iPhone was pure leak territory. Not anymore. Apple announced the iPhone Duo at its September 9 event, opened pre-orders on October 16, and deliveries and in-store sales start today, October 23, 2026, in Canada and the US.
Apple's developer site says the same thing: iPhone Duo is "available to customers starting October 23, 2026." And starting in April 2027, Apple says any app or game submitted to the App Store will need iPhone Duo screenshots. This isn't a one-off experiment.
Below, Confirmed by Apple means Apple's own pages say it. Reported means a named outlet or analyst said it. Our take is our opinion. Nobody here has used a Duo yet, so every hands-on detail comes from named reviewers.
Screens, hinge and the crease
Confirmed by Apple: the inner screen is 7.6 inches (7.58 measured) and the outer screen is 5.4 inches (5.36 measured). Both hit 3000 nits peak brightness with ProMotion up to 120Hz. The inner screen has a nano-texture matte finish. Apple says the inner one is 50 percent bigger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max's. The hinge cover is Grade 5 titanium. Apple calls it the thinnest iPhone ever when open, and it's IP68 rated.
Apple doesn't give a crease measurement. It only says optically clear adhesives let the layers glide as the screen folds, "minimizing stress and crease."
Reported: reviewers mostly agree the crease is hard to see but still there. Gizmodo says it's less pronounced than on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, though you can still feel it. PCMag, per Macworld's roundup, says it shows when the screen is off. Wired calls it "hardly visible." Gizmodo also reports the hinge opens fully flat to 180 degrees, the phone is 5.2mm thick unfolded and it weighs 254g. That's 5g more than an iPhone 18 Pro Max, and weight is the most common complaint in iPhone in Canada's review roundup.
Our take: Apple seems to have handled the crease better than most. But 254g is heavy, and Gizmodo said it made a front pocket sag. Try one in a store before you buy.
Cameras, chip and battery
Confirmed by Apple: two rear cameras, a 48MP Fusion Main and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide with macro. Zoom tops out at 2x optical-quality, which is a crop of the main sensor. There's no telephoto. Up front you get a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outside and an under-display FaceTime camera on the inside. The chip is the A20 Pro, which Apple says has a CPU up to 20 percent faster than the A19 Pro. Apple quotes up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner screen and 44 on the outer, from a dual-battery design that charges to 50 percent in around 20 minutes wired. Storage runs 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. Unlock is Touch ID in the side button, not Face ID. It's eSIM only.
Reported: the missing telephoto is the most common camera knock. Tom's Guide says zoomed shots lose detail. The Verge says photos look crunchier than the iPhone 18 Pro's, per Macworld. CNET notes there's no ProRAW or ProRes. Gizmodo calls the under-display camera poor and lists the battery at 4,883mAh, a figure Apple doesn't publish.
Battery results are split. PCMag got 18 hours 15 minutes in its streaming test, ahead of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Tom's Guide got 13 hours 20 minutes of web browsing, short of the iPhone 18 Pro Max's 17.5 hours. Gizmodo saw 5.5 to 7.5 hours of screen time. The Verge says it gets hot and doesn't seem ready for a full day of heavy use.
Our take: for a foldable, that's good battery life. For an iPhone at this price, the cameras are a step down from the Pro, and you'll miss that more than you'd think.
iOS 27 and the app problem
Confirmed by Apple: the Duo ships with iOS 27. You get Split View, StandBy on either screen even when it's not charging, and apps that adjust as you fold, rotate or flip it. Apple's developer news says it runs iOS 27.1 at launch. Apps need to be rebuilt with Xcode 27.1 to properly fill the inner screen. Apple's new Siri AI is in beta, English only to start.
Reported: MacRumors says existing apps run without changes but show black borders until they're updated. Tom's Guide found black bars in Disney+ and The Weather Channel. Gizmodo says split screen is a fixed 50:50 with two apps and no resizing. It also had keys near the crease stop registering for a few days, which a restart fixed.
Our take: Apple's own apps are ready. Your banking, streaming and work apps may not be for months. The April 2027 screenshot rule should push developers along, but launch-day buyers are paying to wait for them.
What it costs in Canada
Confirmed by Apple: on Apple's Canadian store the Duo is $2,999 for 256GB, $3,299 for 512GB, $3,899 for 1TB and $4,799 for 2TB, before tax. In the US it's US$1,999, $2,199, $2,599 and $3,199. iPhone in Canada reports Apple financing here at $124.96 a month over 24 months.
Here's the math on the gap. The Bank of Canada rate on October 22 was 1.4021. At that rate the US$1,999 model works out to about $2,803. So the Canadian 256GB price is roughly $196 (about 7 percent) above a straight conversion. On the 2TB model the gap grows to about $314. Add 13 percent HST in Ontario and the base model is about $3,389.
Reported: iPhone in Canada compared carriers on the 256GB model with $0 down. Bell lists a full price of $3,084.48, with $77.12 a month plus a $105 plan and a $40 handling fee, and you return the phone or pay $1,233.79 after two years. Telus is $91 a month on a $95 plan. Rogers is $98.77 a month on an $85 plan, with $714 to keep it after two years. Freedom is $109.96 a month on a $70 plan and you keep the phone.
Our take: return programs make the monthly number look friendly, but you don't own the phone at the end. If you plan to keep it, Apple financing or Freedom is cleaner.
Actually getting one: stock, AppleCare and trade-in
Reported: iPhone in Canada found February 2027 delivery dates on Apple's Canadian store for every storage size shortly after pre-orders opened. Citing MacRumors, iPhone in Canada also reports an Apple spokesperson saying walk-in stock will be "limited" in select countries, and Canada is on that list. Apple's site told Canadian shoppers to check back on October 24 for pickup.
Confirmed by Apple: AppleCare+ is offered for the Duo in Canada, but Apple's Canadian AppleCare page doesn't show the Duo's price in text, and it notes a separate service fee for replacing the inner screen's cover layer. Get the exact price at checkout before you commit. With a 7.6-inch folding screen, it's worth it. Trade-in values in Canada depend on condition and model, and Apple sends you to its partner's estimator for a number. The US credit range of US$175 to US$885 is not a Canadian figure.
Our take: if you want one before the holidays, try a walk-in at an Apple Store or a carrier.
What's rumoured next
This is where the rumours still live. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported in his Power On newsletter, as relayed by tbreak in August, that a second-generation foldable is planned for fall 2027, with a third generation as early as 2028 with slightly larger screens. Other outlets have credited 2027 timing to Ming-Chi Kuo or the leaker Digital Chat Station, so the sources don't line up neatly.
In September, ChannelNews reported that Gurman suggested future models like a Duo Max, a cheaper Duo SE and a smaller flip-style Duo mini, and that Face ID and a telephoto camera are priorities that are hard to fit into the thin chassis. Those are hedged predictions, not plans Apple has confirmed. Treat them as maybes.
From a tech standpoint.
The iPhone Duo looks like the most polished first try at a foldable anyone has made. Reviewers broadly agree the crease is minimal and battery life is strong for the category. Gizmodo gave it 4 out of 5. But it's $2,999 here, heavy at 254g, short a telephoto camera and Face ID, and many of your apps aren't ready for it yet. The Verge called it one of Apple's messiest first-generation products in a long time, and Wired suggested waiting for the Duo 2.
Buy it now if you want one screen for reading, email and video on the go, you've got the budget, and you can get one in a store. Wait if photos matter most to you, if you're paying with a carrier return plan you'd regret, or if Gurman's 2027 report is right and a second version is a year away.
If you just want the best iPhone, the iPhone 18 Pro costs less and has the better camera: Apple iPhone 18 Pro review. On Android, the Pixel 11 Pro is a strong camera phone for far less: Google Pixel 11 Pro review. For most Canadians, a great slab phone plus a year of patience is the smarter buy.
