Standpoint Score7.6/10Not tested · research scoreHow this score works ↗

Not tested. This is a research score for the documented features, compatibility and ownership trade-offs discussed in this review, not a performance measurement.

Features & capability 30%8.4

Best-in-class hinge and near-invisible crease per Engadget and Gizmodo, iPhone 18 Pro performance and the longest battery of any foldable in Tom's Guide and PCMag tests, held back by no telephoto, no Face ID and a 50:50-only Split View.

Compatibility & connectivity 20%7.4

Wi-Fi 7, Apple's C2 modem, USB 3 and DisplayPort are strong, but apps built before the iOS 27.1 SDK run letterboxed, Apple Pencil is USB-C only and arrives with iOS 27.2, it's eSIM only, and MagSafe accessories hang off the short edge per 9to5Mac.

Ownership & upkeep 20%6.6

$2,999 plus a $1,499 inner-display repair estimate, an AppleCare+ price Apple's Canadian page doesn't show, a $99 adhesive case, and several launch-day crack reports on r/iPhoneDuo that Apple hasn't addressed.

Setup & everyday use 15%7.6

Reviewers call iOS 27 the most polished foldable software, but 254 g strains wrists per 9to5Mac, Touch ID is slower than Face ID per Engadget, and Gizmodo hit a keyboard bug over the crease and one unexplained reboot.

Documentation & support clarity 15%7.3

Apple's Canadian spec page is clear on sizes, IP68 and charging, and the 15-day return policy is published, but there's no battery capacity, no AppleCare+ price for the Duo, no cover-layer fee and no stated years of iOS support.

The editorial verdict

From a tech standpoint.

The iPhone Duo is the best-built foldable reviewers have handled, with a crease that mostly disappears, iPhone 18 Pro speed and better battery life than the Galaxy Z Fold 8. It is also $2,999 in Canada, 254 g, missing a telephoto camera and Face ID, and many apps still run with black bars. Add a $1,499 inner-screen repair price and a run of launch-day crack reports that Apple hasn't addressed, and the smart move for most Canadians is to wait for iOS updates, app fixes and a clear answer on the hinge. If you must have one now, buy AppleCare+ with it and keep the receipt for the 15-day return window.

Reasons to consider it

  • The crease is the least visible on any foldable reviewers have seen, because the nano-texture matte layer hides it head-on and Gizmodo found it flatter than both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold
  • It runs the same A20 Pro as the iPhone 18 Pro, and Gizmodo's Geekbench 7 results were nearly identical, with a GPU score about three and a half times the Z Fold 8's
  • Battery life beats the Android foldables in every outside test: Tom's Guide got 13 h 20 min of web browsing against 10 h 6 min for the Z Fold 8, and PCMag's streaming test ran 18 h 15 min
  • It is IP68 rated and opens fully flat, and both Engadget and TechRadar call the hinge one of the best they've used

Go in knowing

  • At $2,999 it costs $1,100 more than an iPhone 18 Pro Max in Canada, and an inner-screen repair without AppleCare+ is $1,499
  • No telephoto lens, no Face ID and no Action button; several reviewers say the cameras sit below the iPhone 18 Pro, and 9to5Mac calls the Touch ID switch the hardest adjustment
  • Apps built before the iOS 27.1 SDK show black bars on the inner screen, Split View is a fixed 50:50 with two apps, and even some of Apple's own apps weren't updated at launch
  • Several separate launch-day owners on r/iPhoneDuo reported inner-screen cracks along the hinge within hours; Apple replaced some in store but hasn't publicly explained the cause

01 / THE DETAILS

The $2,999 iPhone with a $1,499 screen repair

Start with the number nobody puts in the ad. Apple's estimated out-of-warranty price to replace the iPhone Duo's inner folding display in Canada is $1,499, per iPhone in Canada's report, and the catch-all "other damage" fee is $2,249. That is for a phone that costs $2,999 for 256GB on Apple.ca and $2,999.99 unlocked at Best Buy Canada (checked October 24, 2026). The 2TB model is $4,799 before tax.

The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable. It opens from a 5.4-inch phone into a 7.6-inch tablet with a matte inner screen, runs the iPhone 18 Pro's A20 Pro chip, and went on sale October 23. Apple says the inner display is 50 percent bigger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max's and that the open phone is the thinnest iPhone ever at 5.2 mm.

This is a research review. Cameron hasn't used one yet, so every hands-on detail below is attributed to the outlet or owners who reported it. The question it answers is simple: is this the foldable that finally makes sense, or the one you let other people beta test? Start with what you actually give up compared with the iPhone you'd otherwise buy.

02 / THE DETAILS

What Apple quietly dropped to make an iPhone fold

Against an iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,899 in Canada, the Duo gives up a lot for the extra $1,100. There is no telephoto lens; Apple's spec sheet lists a 48MP Fusion Main and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, with the 2x "telephoto" being a crop of the main sensor. There is no Face ID; Touch ID lives in the side button. There is no Action button, only Camera Control. There is no SIM tray, only dual eSIM, which Apple says freed space for battery.

What you gain is the screen. Gizmodo describes the nano-texture inner panel as looking like printed paper, and the hinge opens to a full 180 degrees, something many Android foldables can't do. Apple also added Split View for two apps, a StandBy mode that works propped on a table without a charger, and Duo Preview, which turns the outer screen into a viewfinder so the subject sees the shot. Apple Pencil support (USB-C model only) arrives with iOS 27.2, per MacRumors and 9to5Mac.

Who shouldn't upgrade: anyone whose phone is mainly a camera, anyone who hates fingerprint readers, and anyone on a 17 Pro or 18 Pro who wants a better phone rather than a different one. 9to5Mac's reviewer, who likes the Duo, still says it isn't the practical choice for most people. The hardware that decides the rest is the hinge, and that's where launch week got messy.

03 / THE DETAILS

The crease reviewers barely see, and the cracks owners are posting

On the crease, the reviews agree. Engadget sees a small divot at an angle that vanishes head-on. Gizmodo says it's barely visible unless the screen is off, and feels less pronounced than the Galaxy Z Fold 8's and much less bumpy than the Pixel 11 Pro Fold's. PCMag, in Macworld's roundup, notes it still shows with the screen off or under a finger. 9to5Mac says it mainly appears in bright light on dark content. Apple's own line is that optically clear adhesives let the layers glide to reduce stress and crease.

The hinge gets the same praise. Engadget calls it one of the nicest they've used, with resistance that changes through the arc. Gizmodo dropped an open unit down wet steps and got frame scuffs, no screen damage. TechRadar lists the hinge as possibly the best ever. Apple backs it with IP68, which Engadget notes only the Pixel 11 Pro Fold line also offers among foldables sold in the US.

Then launch day happened. On r/iPhoneDuo, several separate owners posted inner screens cracked along the fold within hours, some before finishing setup, with a bright line of pixels down one half. One post, which the subreddit's moderators marked as verified, described fewer than 20 openings before failure and a same-day replacement at an Apple Store. Android Authority covered the reports on October 23 and said Apple hadn't commented. Others in those threads point out that reviewers folded units thousands of times without failure.

Where that leaves a buyer: nobody knows the scale yet. It could be a bad batch, mishandling or a design weakness at the hinge. Apple hasn't said, and that silence is a reason to wait a few weeks before paying $2,999. If you buy anyway, buy AppleCare+ with it and don't press the centre of the screen to close it. The next question is whether the battery holds up better than the glass.

04 / THE DETAILS

The battery outlasts the Galaxy Z Fold 8 but not a Pro Max

Apple quotes up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen and 44 on the outer, and doesn't publish a capacity. Engadget and Gizmodo both put it at about 4,883 mAh across two cells. Apple's charging claim is 50 percent in about 20 minutes with a 60W adapter, and Engadget found 45W enough for full speed. No charger is in the box, only a 1 m cable.

The outside tests line up. Engadget's video rundown ran 28 hours 48 minutes against 28:14 for the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Tom's Guide's web-browsing test over 5G at 150 nits got 13 hours 20 minutes on the Duo, 10 hours 6 minutes on the Z Fold 8, and 17 hours 31 minutes on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. PCMag streamed YouTube at full brightness on the inner screen for 18 hours 15 minutes, ahead of the Z Fold 8's 16:30 and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold's 14:21.

Real days are less tidy. Gizmodo saw 5.5 to 7.5 hours of screen-on time and said a camera-heavy day hit low power mode after five hours. The Verge said it gets warm, sometimes hot, and doesn't seem ready for a full day of heavy use. 9to5Mac finished a normal day with about 20 percent left and noted it runs a bit warmer than an 18 Pro. So: best battery of any foldable, four hours short of a Pro Max in the same test. For a commuter who reads on the GO train and watches at lunch, that's fine. For a full day shooting video, pack a cable.

05 / THE DETAILS

Two cameras, no zoom lens: how far the photos fall behind an 18 Pro

The spec sheet reads well, two 48MP sensors with 4K 120 fps video, but every reviewer lands in the same place. Engadget says image quality matches the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and sometimes beats it in low light, yet the iPhone 18 Pro stays the better camera phone because of its variable aperture and longer zoom. Gizmodo rates it slightly above the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air, well above the 17e, and below the 18 Pro, with more flare around streetlights and softer macro shots.

The Verge, in Macworld's roundup, says sharpening makes fine detail look crunchy next to an 18 Pro, and Tom's Guide says zoomed shots lose detail without a telephoto. PetaPixel scored the phone 7.5 out of 10 and had earlier flagged the camera compromises, noting the main sensor is the base iPhone 17's, a step smaller than the Pro's. CNET, per Cult of Mac, gave 8.7 out of 10 and said the cameras pleasantly surprised them.

The inner selfie camera is the real weak spot. Gizmodo and 9to5Mac both put the under-display FaceTime camera at 4MP, and Gizmodo calls its shots low-res and washed out. The workaround is Duo Preview: open the phone, use the outer screen as a viewfinder, and take selfies with the 48MP rear camera. That's a neat trick, but it means the camera you'd use most on a video call is the worst one on the phone. Software is the next thing to check, because it decides whether the big screen is useful at all.

06 / THE DETAILS

Black bars, a 50:50 split and Apple apps that weren't ready

Apps built before the iOS 27.1 SDK don't fill the inner screen. They run letterboxed with thick black bars on both sides. Wired, in Macworld's roundup, says many apps look bad this way and suggests waiting a few months. Tom's Guide found black bars in Disney+ and The Weather Channel, and games that filled about three quarters of the screen. Engadget singles out Telegram for its empty side areas. Engadget lists Netflix, Instagram and OpenTable among those already adapted.

The Reddit pattern matches. On r/iPhone and r/iPhoneDuo, a recurring complaint from new owners is that some of Apple's own apps, including the Apple Store app and Apple Sports, hadn't been updated for the Duo on day one. Apple has said that from April 2027 every App Store submission needs iPhone Duo screenshots, which should push developers, but launch buyers are paying to wait.

Multitasking is narrower than Samsung's. Gizmodo lays it out: two apps only, a fixed 50:50 split, landscape only, no resizing, no Slide Over, no Stage Manager, one saved app pair. Engadget still says side-by-side works well, and 9to5Mac calls Split View a real productivity gain. Touch ID is the other adjustment. 9to5Mac calls it the hardest change, Engadget found it accurate but slightly slow, and several reviewers recommend turning on Apple Watch unlock. Gizmodo also hit a bug where the T, G and V keys over the crease stopped registering for a few days, fixed by a restart.

07 / THE DETAILS

Duo at $2,999 or a Fold 8, Pixel Fold or 18 Pro Max for less?

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, $2,399 for 256GB at Canadian launch per WhistleOut and often discounted by Samsung Canada. It's 201 g against the Duo's 254 g, with a visible hole-punch camera inside and a more obvious crease, but with far more flexible multitasking: multiple apps, portrait or landscape, custom widths, saved pairs. Gizmodo found it throttles in 3D games where the Duo doesn't, and it loses every battery test above. Pick it if you multitask hard, want a lighter phone and don't mind Android.

Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold, $2,499 for 256GB per iPhone in Canada. It's 239 g, IP68 like the Duo, and Gizmodo says its crease is noticeably bumpier. Pixel cameras are the draw. PCMag's streaming test put it almost four hours behind the Duo, and Gizmodo says it's lighter in hand. Pick it if photos matter more than feel and you'd rather have Google's software.

iPhone 18 Pro Max, $1,899 for 256GB on Apple.ca. Same chip, a telephoto lens, Face ID, an Action button, 5 g lighter and four extra hours in Tom's Guide's test, for $1,100 less. The Duo only wins if a 7.6-inch screen in your pocket is the point. For most people reading this, the Pro Max is the answer, and Tech Standpoint's iPhone 18 Pro review covers the camera gap. The last piece is what the Duo costs to own after the receipt.

08 / THE DETAILS

Living with it: AppleCare+, $99 adhesive cases and February delivery

Apple's Canadian AppleCare+ page lists the iPhone Duo in its table but shows no price in the cells, and it says a separate service fee applies to replace the inner display's cover layer, without stating the amount. Reviewers got it at US$49; iPhone in Canada reports Apple's Canadian estimate at $69. The standard iPhone AppleCare+ fees on that page are $39 to $129 for screens and back glass and $129 for other damage. Get the Duo's plan price at checkout, because without it the $1,499 inner display quote is yours.

Cases are a surprise. Apple's $99 iPhone Duo Case attaches with adhesive strips, which owners on r/apple point out is normal for foldables but isn't mentioned on Apple's page. The $179 Folio adds a kickstand. Gizmodo notes MagSafe tripods only stand the phone up folded, and 9to5Mac says MagSafe wallets and batteries hang off the shorter bottom edge. Apple's Canadian sales policy gives 15 days from delivery to return an undamaged phone with its packaging; Best Buy and carriers set their own terms, so check the retailer's return policy.

Getting one is the other cost. iPhone in Canada reported Apple.ca orders showing February 2027 delivery within hours of pre-orders opening, a two-per-customer cap, and limited walk-in stock. Bell, Telus and Rogers sell it on return-or-pay plans ($1,233.79 to keep it after two years at Bell), while Freedom's $109.96 a month leaves you owning it. Apple's financing is $124.96 a month over 24 months. Apple hasn't published how many years of iOS updates the Duo gets, and the launch-day crack reports are the long-term risk to watch.

09 / THE DETAILS

Buy it, wait, or buy the Pro Max instead

Buy it now if you've wanted a folding iPhone for years, you'll pay for AppleCare+, and your phone is mostly for reading, mail, video and two apps at once. Engadget gave it 8.8, TechRadar 4.5 of 5, CNET 8.7, Gizmodo 4 of 5, and they agree it's the most polished foldable yet.

Wait if you can. Wired and WAtoday both suggest holding for a second generation, Gurman has reported a 2027 model, iOS 27.2 and app updates are weeks away, and Apple owes everyone an answer on the hinge cracks. Waiting also means buying one you can actually get, instead of a February 2027 delivery date.

Skip it if photos are the reason you buy iPhones, if you need Face ID for banking apps and glove weather, or if $2,999 plus tax is a stretch. The iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,899 is the better phone for most Canadians. On Android, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold at $2,499 is the closer rival, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the multitasker's pick. The score below reflects superb hardware pulled down by price, repair risk and software that isn't done.

Questions before checkout.

How much does the iPhone Duo cost in Canada?

On Apple.ca it's $2,999 for 256GB, $3,299 for 512GB, $3,899 for 1TB and $4,799 for 2TB before tax, as of October 24, 2026. Best Buy Canada lists the unlocked 256GB at $2,999.99. Apple's financing is $124.96 a month over 24 months, and carrier return plans run roughly $77 to $110 a month plus a plan.

Does the iPhone Duo have Face ID?

No. Apple put Touch ID in the side button and there's no Face ID on either screen. Engadget found it accurate but slightly slower to unlock, and 9to5Mac calls the switch the hardest thing to get used to. Turning on Apple Watch unlock helps, and some banking apps that rely on face authentication may behave differently.

Is the iPhone Duo's screen cracking?

Several separate launch-day owners on r/iPhoneDuo posted inner screens cracked along the hinge within hours, and Android Authority reported the pattern on October 23. Apple replaced some units in store but hasn't publicly explained the cause or the scale. Reviewers folded units thousands of times without failure, so it may be a bad batch, but it's unresolved.

How long does the iPhone Duo battery last compared with the Galaxy Z Fold 8?

Longer in every outside test. Tom's Guide got 13 hours 20 minutes of web browsing on the Duo versus 10 hours 6 minutes on the Z Fold 8, and PCMag's streaming test ran 18 hours 15 minutes against 16 hours 30 minutes. It still trails the iPhone 18 Pro Max by about four hours in Tom's Guide's test.

What does it cost to repair an iPhone Duo in Canada without AppleCare+?

iPhone in Canada reports Apple's estimates as $1,499 for the inner folding display, $499 for the outer display, $269 for back glass, $319 for a battery, $69 for the replaceable cover layer and $2,249 for other damage. Apple's Canadian AppleCare+ page lists the Duo but shows no plan price, so confirm it at checkout.

Do all apps work on the iPhone Duo's big screen?

They run, but apps not built with the iOS 27.1 SDK show black bars on the inner screen. Reviewers found this in Disney+, Telegram and some games, and owners on Reddit flagged a few of Apple's own apps at launch. Apple requires iPhone Duo screenshots for all App Store submissions from April 2027, so support should improve over the coming months.
