Not tested. This is a research score for the documented features, compatibility and ownership trade-offs discussed in this review, not a performance measurement.

Features & capability 30%8.3

Notebookcheck measured 627 nits SDR and 1,515 nits HDR on the 7.4 inch 120 Hz OLED, and TMR sticks, Hall triggers and better cooling are real upgrades, but game frame rates match the 2025 Ally X and trail the Intel Claw by 20 to 40 percent.

Compatibility & connectivity 20%8.0

USB4 with Thunderbolt 4 plus a second USB-C port, microSD Express, Bluetooth 5.4 and an eGPU path are strong, but it stays on Wi-Fi 6E and owners report slow-charger warnings on some third-party docks.

Ownership & upkeep 20%6.9

$1,899 is $400 over an identical-chip Ally X, battery is two to three hours in heavy games per Tom's Guide and Notebookcheck, and several launch owners report stiff sticks and clicking triggers.

Setup & everyday use 15%7.6

Reviewers call the grips the most comfortable in the class and Xbox mode works for Game Pass, but BGR's touchscreen-heavy setup, XDA's sleep and wake issues and update interruptions keep Windows in the way.

Documentation & support clarity 15%7.4

The ROG Canada spec page is thorough and the eStore states a 1 year warranty and security updates to 2030, but return windows aren't published on the pages read and the Canada spec page omits the DisplayHDR certification the US release lists.

The editorial verdict

From a tech standpoint.

Buy the X20 if you don't own a Windows handheld yet, you value the screen and the grips over raw speed, and $1,899 doesn't make you wince. Every reviewer who scored it liked the hardware; the arguments are all about price. Skip it if you already have a 2025 Xbox Ally X, because the chip, RAM, storage and battery are the same and the gaming frame rates in Notebookcheck's tests are within a few percent. If you want more power for the money, the Intel-based MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ runs 20 to 40 percent faster in outside tests but costs $2,199.99 and is sold out at Best Buy Canada right now. The sensible value pick is still the Xbox Ally X at $1,499.99, as long as an LCD doesn't bother you.

Reasons to consider it

  • The OLED is the real deal: Notebookcheck measured 627 nits in SDR, 1,515 nits HDR peak and a 20,567:1 contrast ratio, and every review read for this piece calls the screen the reason to buy
  • It runs cooler than the old model, with Insider Gaming reporting about 15 C lower under load and PC Gamer reporting a 79 C CPU peak against 96 C on the Xbox Ally X
  • Comfort is the other consensus: Gizmodo, Insider Gaming and BGR all describe the rubberized Xbox-style grips as the most comfortable in the category
  • Two USB-C ports, one of them USB4 with Thunderbolt 4, plus a microSD Express slot make it easier to dock and expand than a Steam Deck

Go in knowing

  • Same Z2 Extreme chip, RAM, storage and battery as the $1,499.99 Xbox Ally X, so you pay $400 more for a screen, grips and sticks
  • Battery life is unchanged: Tom's Guide got 2 hours 47 minutes in its gaming test and Notebookcheck got 2 hours 13 minutes in Turbo on battery
  • Several owners in r/XboxAlly and r/ROGAlly report stiff or clicking sticks and a clicking left trigger on launch units, and some returned them
  • It is heavier than before at 756 g, Windows still interrupts the Xbox mode for updates, and the glossy OLED washes out in direct light per Gizmodo

01 / THE DETAILS

$1,899 in Canada, and the old model got more expensive while you weren't looking

Here's the number that frames everything: the ROG Xbox Ally X20 costs $1,899 in Canada, and on October 25, 2026 it was out of stock at the ASUS eStore and sold out online at Best Buy Canada. The 2025 Xbox Ally X launched here at $1,299.99. The same day, Best Buy Canada listed it at $1,499.99 and the ASUS eStore at $1,499, both in stock. So the gap between old and new is $400, not the $600 the launch prices suggest.

The X20 is Asus's 20th anniversary edition of its Xbox handheld, built with Microsoft. It is a translucent black Windows 11 handheld with a 7.4 inch OLED, an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD. It went on sale October 15, 2026, at $1,299.99 US. A $3,499 bundle adds ROG XREAL R1 glasses, a dbrand case and a Pelican case.

This is a research review. Cameron hasn't used one yet, so the measurements below come from Notebookcheck, Tom's Guide, PC Gamer, XDA, Gizmodo, BGR, Insider Gaming and two Canadian outlets, plus owner threads. The question it answers is simple: is the screen worth $400 over the Ally X, and does anything else justify the price?

02 / THE DETAILS

What the extra $400 buys, and what Asus left exactly where it was

The screen is the headline. The Xbox Ally X has a 7 inch 1080p IPS panel rated at 500 nits. The X20 moves to a 7.4 inch 1080p OLED by trimming the top bezel, with 120 Hz, a VRR range that now reaches down to 30 Hz instead of 48 Hz per XDA, Dolby Vision and an anti-reflection coating. Asus rates it at 600 nits in SDR and 1,400 nits peak in HDR.

The rest is smaller. TMR magnetic joysticks replace the old sticks, the triggers get deeper travel and impulse haptics, the D-pad rotates between four-way and eight-way modes, the bumpers and face buttons are reshaped and the grips are rubberized. The microSD reader moves to the faster microSD Express standard. Asus says the redesigned cooling adds an airflow path straight to the chip, 20 percent more airflow and 11 percent more fin area. The shell is now semi-translucent with gold accents, and it weighs 756 g, up 41 g.

What didn't change matters more. Same Z2 Extreme, same Radeon 890M, same 24 GB and 1 TB, same 80 Wh battery, same Wi-Fi 6E rather than Wi-Fi 7, and still Windows 11. If you own an Xbox Ally X and your complaints were speed or battery, the X20 fixes neither, and XDA and BGR both say current owners should hold on to what they have. The next question is whether the OLED alone earns the money.

03 / THE DETAILS

The OLED measured: 627 nits, 1,515 nits HDR peak, and one flicker caveat

Notebookcheck put instruments on the panel and the numbers back up the marketing. It measured 627 nits maximum in SDR, 1,515 nits HDR peak, a black level of 0.03 nits for a 20,567:1 contrast ratio, 99.4 percent DCI-P3 coverage and a colour error of 1.4 against the reference. Response time was about one millisecond. The old Ally X's IPS panel was rated at 500 nits with ordinary LCD contrast, so night scenes and HDR highlights are where you'll see the difference first.

Two warnings. Notebookcheck detected PWM flicker at 120 Hz on brightness settings of 120 percent and below, with an 11 percent amplitude, and lists it as a con. If flickering OLEDs give you headaches, that is a real factor. Gizmodo also notes that the glossy panel washes out in direct sunlight and is somewhat reflective despite the coating. In a dark room it looks superb; on a GO train by the window it will fight you.

The reviewers who were most moved were the ones coming from an LCD. Insider Gaming called it hard to return to LCD afterwards, and Console Creatures calls the X20 the best handheld in its class, with the screen as the first reason. Owners in r/XboxAlly who came from a Steam Deck OLED to the Ally X say the LCD was the thing they missed most, which is the whole case for the X20. Now the part that doesn't move: speed.

04 / THE DETAILS

Same chip, same frame rates: the benchmark tables nobody at Asus wants you to see

Notebookcheck ran the X20 against last year's Xbox Ally X and the Intel-based MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ at 1080p. Cyberpunk 2077 at Ultra: 29.3 fps, 28 fps and 39.6 fps. Baldur's Gate 3 at Ultra: 29.8, 32.5 and 44.2. GTA V at highest settings: 34.7, 31.1 and 39.1. Strange Brigade at Ultra: 60, 58.8 and 91.9. Its conclusion is that the X20 and the Ally X are the same machine for games, and the Intel Arc B390 in the Claw is 20 to 30 percent faster.

Gizmodo saw the same thing from the other side. In its synthetic tests the X20 was at best 3 percent ahead of the original, and in some games 1 to 3 fps behind, which it treats as noise. Gears of War: E-Day at 1080p medium with no upscaling managed about 16 fps in the built-in benchmark and around 35 fps in play, with dips into the high 20s. The Claw 8 EX AI+ was 30 to 40 percent faster in many titles. XDA reported Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced at 25 to 30 fps on the X20 against 50 to 60 fps on the Claw at the same settings.

In plain terms, this is a 1080p medium-settings machine for new games and a comfortable one for everything older or lighter. One thing to watch: Asus scheduled an AMD FSR 4.1 preview driver for the Ally X and X20 for October 23 through Armoury Crate's preview channel, and owners in r/XboxAlly confirm it has landed and say frame generation looks noticeably better with it. That helps the X20 and the cheaper Ally X equally. Battery is the next thing the chip decides.

05 / THE DETAILS

Battery: still two to three hours in anything demanding, eight in a pixel-art dungeon

Tom's Guide's standard gaming battery test ran 2 hours 47 minutes on the X20, against 4 hours 10 minutes for the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+. Notebookcheck's Cyberpunk loop at 150 nits gave 3 hours 48 minutes in the 13 W Whisper mode, 3 hours 4 minutes in Performance and 2 hours 13 minutes in Turbo on battery, and it says the runtimes match last year's Ally X. XDA simply says about two hours in most cases.

The spread depends entirely on the game. BGR got about two hours in Resident Evil Requiem, three in Star Wars Zero Company, 6 hours 34 minutes in Final Fantasy Tactics and nearly eight hours in Blood Dungeon in Silent mode. iPhone in Canada reports roughly two hours at the 30 W Turbo setting and over five at 10 W. PC Gamer's PCMark 10 gaming loop ran 149 minutes on the X20 against 125 on the Ally X, and its stress-test gaming run gave 2 hours 9 minutes at 25 W and almost three hours at 17 W, so there is a small gain in some conditions.

For a Canadian commuter, that means a Toronto to Hamilton GO ride is fine on a big game and a Vancouver to Calgary flight is not, unless you drop to Silent mode or pack a 65 W or larger USB-C charger. The 80 Wh pack charges at up to 68 W with the Asus adapter, and the new Travel Mode caps charging at 65 W to protect the battery. Notebookcheck measured power draw peaking at 85 W in Turbo and recommends a 100 W charger if you play plugged in. Comfort is next, and it is the strongest argument for the X20.

06 / THE DETAILS

The grips reviewers love, and the stiff-stick reports owners keep posting

Insider Gaming calls the X20 the most comfortable handheld it has used. Gizmodo says the Xbox-controller grips stop the hand cramps it gets from Steam Deck-style devices, and BGR says it feels like holding an oversized Xbox controller. XDA is the dissenting voice: its reviewer found the arms slightly too big for their hands and cramped in long sessions. If your hands are small, try one in a store before you commit, because the body is wider than a Deck.

The TMR sticks are built to resist drift, and reviewers describe them as more substantial and slightly stiffer than Hall effect sticks. That stiffness is where owner reports cluster. In r/XboxAlly and r/ROGAlly, several separate owners describe sticks that feel stiff or click when tilted down, and several more describe a left trigger that clicks on release. Some returned units; some got replacements with the same quirk. It is a launch-batch pattern worth checking in the return window, not a reason to write the device off.

The transforming D-pad gets the least love. Gizmodo found it doesn't lock in eight-way mode, so a finger sliding across it can snap it back to four-way, and XDA barely felt the difference. Notebookcheck's unit had some D-pad looseness. One owner also reports mystery scratches on the translucent shell, and Console Creatures wonders how the rubber grips will wear. Small things, but at $1,899 you notice them. The software is the bigger daily factor.

07 / THE DETAILS

Does the Xbox full-screen experience finally make Windows disappear?

Mostly, with asterisks. The X20 boots into Xbox mode, a controller-driven full-screen launcher that pulls Steam, Epic, GOG and Game Pass into one library. BGR found the interface easy to use and Insider Gaming calls it solid and improving, noting you can install and launch other stores without touching the desktop. Microsoft has added per-game default performance profiles, and Asus's Game Profile 2.0 saves your settings per title.

The asterisks are Windows. BGR's first-run setup leaned on the touchscreen for passwords and driver updates and it recommends a Bluetooth keyboard. XDA still hits sleep and wake problems and wants every setting inside the Xbox app instead of split with Armoury Crate. Gizmodo reports occasional random wake-ups and settings that are only reachable from the desktop. iPhone in Canada's complaint is that Windows updates still kick you out of Xbox mode, and Console Creatures misses being able to wake the device from a controller the way a Steam Deck can.

The honest read: if you live in Game Pass, this is the best Game Pass handheld you can buy, because the launcher is built around it. If most of your library is Steam and you'd rather never see a Windows dialog, a Steam Deck is still calmer. Next, what else $1,899 buys in Canada.

08 / THE DETAILS

X20 vs Ally X vs Steam Deck OLED vs the Intel handhelds, in Canadian dollars

The 2025 Xbox Ally X is the obvious alternative at $1,499.99 at Best Buy Canada, in stock, with Best Buy open-box units at $1,174.99 and refurbished ones at $1,049.99 on October 25. Same chip, same battery, 41 g lighter, 7 inch 500-nit LCD. It also gets the FSR 4.1 preview. For most people who care about value, that is the buy, and it's what Tom's Guide and XDA point toward.

The Steam Deck OLED is $1,129 for 512 GB and $1,349 for 1 TB after Valve's May 2026 price increase, per MobileSyrup. We scored it 8.4: a brilliant 7.4 inch OLED, a calmer SteamOS, better battery per hour of play and a weaker chip, so new AAA games need lower settings. BGR calls it a close rival for the screen and notes the X20 is 116 g heavier. If Steam is your library, it saves you $550 to $770.

At the top end, Best Buy Canada lists the Lenovo Legion Go 2 (Z2 Extreme, 32 GB, 1 TB, 8.8 inch OLED) at $2,299.95 and the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ (Intel Arc G3 Extreme) at $2,199.99, and both were sold out online on October 25. The Claw is the one that beats the X20 on speed, by 20 to 40 percent in Notebookcheck's and Gizmodo's tests, and on battery in Tom's Guide's. The older MSI Claw 8 AI+ is $1,499.99. The X20 sits in the middle: the nicest body and screen under $2,000, not the fastest. Ownership costs come next.

09 / THE DETAILS

Living with it in Canada: warranty, updates, cases and the dock question

The ASUS eStore Canada listing states a 1 year manufacturer's limited warranty, and Asus Canada sells a 1 year extension and a 1 year extension with two years of accidental damage cover, both for the ROG Ally line. Best Buy Canada offers its own two-year plan at $404.99 and three-year plan at $484.99. The rog.asus.com Canada page commits to product security updates until December 31, 2030. Neither Asus nor Best Buy publishes a return window on the pages read for this review, so check the retailer's return policy before buying, especially given the stick reports.

There are no subscriptions required, but there are costs that creep in. Game Pass is the natural pairing and the two included months run out. A case isn't in the box; the ROG travel case is $48.99 on sale at Best Buy Canada. Storage is easy, since the M.2 2280 slot is reachable under the fans per Notebookcheck and an r/ROGAlly owner moved a 4 TB drive straight over from an older Ally X. microSD Express cards are faster than old microSD but cost more.

Docking works through either USB-C port, and the USB4 port handles an external GPU. Owners report that some third-party docks trigger slow-charger warnings, so budget for a known-good 100 W charger if you plan to play plugged in. Noise is the other daily reality: Notebookcheck measured 29 to 34 dB on battery and about 40 dB in Turbo on mains, which it calls loud. Last, who this is for.

10 / THE DETAILS

Who should buy the X20, who should skip it, and what to buy instead

Buy it if this is your first premium Windows handheld, you play Game Pass as much as Steam, you want the OLED and the big grips, and you can spend $1,899 without resenting it. The reviewers are consistent that the hardware is the best Asus has made: Gizmodo gave it 4.5 out of 5, Notebookcheck 88 percent, XDA 8 out of 10 and CNET 8.3 out of 10. Check the sticks and triggers in the first week.

Skip it if you own a 2025 Xbox Ally X. You already have the chip, the battery and the ports, and the screen alone is $400 after selling nothing. Skip it too if you need every frame, because the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is faster and lasts longer on a charge, if you can find one and stomach $2,199.99.

Buy the Xbox Ally X at $1,499.99 instead if value matters more than contrast, or a Steam Deck OLED at $1,129 if Steam is your library and you want the quiet life. Our score reflects a superb screen and body on an unchanged platform at a Canadian price that is hard to defend, with early quality reports that make the return window matter.

Questions before checkout.

Is the ROG Xbox Ally X20 faster than the 2025 Xbox Ally X?

No. Both use the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme with 24 GB of RAM. Notebookcheck's game benchmarks put the two within a few percent of each other, and Gizmodo saw at most a 3 percent gain in synthetic tests. The X20's upgrades are the OLED screen, controls, cooling and grips.

How much does the ROG Xbox Ally X20 cost in Canada?

$1,899 at the ASUS eStore Canada and $1,899.99 at Best Buy Canada, with the XREAL glasses bundle at $3,499. On October 25, 2026 the standalone unit was out of stock at Asus and sold out online at Best Buy, while the 2025 Xbox Ally X was in stock at $1,499.99.

How long does the ROG Xbox Ally X20 battery last?

Expect two to three hours in demanding games. Tom's Guide measured 2 hours 47 minutes in its gaming test, Notebookcheck got 2 hours 13 minutes in Turbo and 3 hours 48 minutes in Whisper mode, and BGR saw six to eight hours in light indie games. Outside reviewers say it matches the 2025 Ally X.

Does the ROG Xbox Ally X20 have stick drift problems?

The TMR magnetic sticks are designed to resist drift and no reviewer reported drift. What several owners in r/XboxAlly and r/ROGAlly do report is sticks that feel stiff or click when pushed down and a left trigger that clicks on release, and some exchanged units. Test yours inside the return window.
