Sightline · connecting the glasses

Get your glasses talking to Sightline.

Sightline reaches your Ray-Ban Meta glasses through Meta's own developer toolkit, so there are a few one-time steps in the Meta AI app. It takes about five minutes, and the app walks you through the same steps with a live checklist.

The short version

Seven steps, most of them taps.

  1. Pair the glasses in Meta AI if you haven't already.
  2. Turn on Developer Mode in Meta AI: Settings, App info, tap the version number five times.
  3. Tap Connect in Sightline and approve it in Meta AI.
  4. Link the glasses: put them on, then tap Link.
  5. Allow camera access when Meta AI asks.
  6. Allow microphone access.
  7. Test it: ask "what am I looking at?"

In the app: Settings, Glasses, Step-by-step connection. It ticks each step green as you go.

Before you start.

An Android phone
Android 12 or newer, with Sightline installed from the Sightline page.
Supported glasses
Meta's toolkit supports Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 1 and Gen 2), Ray-Ban Meta Optics and Meta Ray-Ban Display. We build and test on Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2.
Up-to-date Meta software
Meta's toolkit 1.0 expects the Meta AI app at version V290 or newer and glasses firmware V128 or newer. Meta's guide says you can check the glasses' version in Meta AI under Devices, your glasses, the gear icon, Device settings, General, About, Version.

1. Make sure the glasses are paired in Meta AI.

Sightline doesn't pair with the glasses itself. The Meta AI app does that, and Sightline borrows the connection. If you already use your glasses with Meta AI ("Hey Meta" works), you're done with this step.

2. Turn on Developer Mode in Meta AI.

Meta's toolkit is still in preview, so Meta only lets apps like Sightline connect once you switch this on. You only do it once.

  1. Open the Meta AI app and go to Settings, then App info.
  2. Tap the app version number five times. A Developer Mode switch appears.
  3. Turn Developer Mode on and confirm with Enable.

Developer Mode only lets apps you choose connect to your glasses. It doesn't change anything else about Meta AI or the glasses.

3. Connect Sightline to Meta AI.

  1. Open Sightline. On the welcome tour, or in Settings, Glasses, tap Connect.
  2. Meta AI opens and asks you to approve Sightline. Approve it.
  3. You're sent back to Sightline, which now says Connected to Meta AI.

You can see and manage this in Meta AI under Settings, App connections, Developer mode apps, where Sightline is now listed.

4. Link the glasses.

Put the glasses on, or open the case with them inside, and tap Link in Sightline. The status at the top of the Talk tab turns green and shows the battery level.

5. Allow camera access.

The first time Sightline needs the glasses' camera, Meta AI asks you to allow it, then sends you back. Allow it. In the app's step-by-step connection screen there's an Allow camera button so you can do it up front instead of mid-question. You can change it later in Meta AI under App connections.

6. Allow microphone access.

There are two parts. Android asks Sightline for the microphone on first launch, which is how it hears your questions. Meta AI separately asks whether Sightline may use the glasses' own microphones, which on-glasses speech recognition and recording with sound use. The step-by-step screen has a button for each.

7. Test it.

On the Talk tab, tap the mic and ask "what am I looking at?" The glasses take a photo, the answer comes back in your ear, and the photo shows in the conversation. If you have an AI key saved, you're done. If not, the app walks you through getting one; Gemini is free.

The capture button.

While Sightline is linked, the glasses give it the capture button: press to ask a question, hold to ask about what you're looking at. If you'd rather keep Meta's press-for-photo and hold-for-video, pick Meta camera in Settings, Glasses, Capture button. Sightline then links to the glasses only while it uses their camera, and you start it with "Hey Meta, start Sightline", the wake word or the mic in the app.

If something goes wrong.

"Meta AI app not found or not ready"
Install the Meta AI app from the Play Store, sign in, and pair your glasses in it first. Sightline talks to the glasses through Meta AI, so it can't connect until Meta AI can.
Connect opens Meta AI but nothing happens
Developer Mode is probably off. Turn it on (step 2), then tap Connect again in Sightline. Meta AI should ask you to approve Sightline and send you back.
Sightline isn't listed under Developer mode apps
The connection never finished. In Sightline go to Settings, Glasses, tap Disconnect if it's there, then Connect, and approve in Meta AI. If another developer app is listed and you aren't using it, disconnect it there too.
It keeps connecting and dropping, and you own two pairs
With two pairs set up in Meta AI, update to Sightline 1.7.5 or newer: it links the pair you are wearing. You can also pick the pair under Settings, Glasses, Which glasses, or turn the other pair off.
"No glasses found" or "No glasses nearby"
Put the glasses on or open the case, unfold the arms, and check they show as connected in Meta AI. Bluetooth has to be on.
"The glasses need an update" though Meta AI says they're current
Meta keeps a separate toolkit component on the glasses that updates from a different place. In Meta AI open Settings, then App connections, and update whatever it offers. Then tap Connect again. Meta's toolkit 1.0 expects glasses firmware V128 or newer and Meta AI app V290 or newer.
"Camera access hasn't been granted in Meta AI yet"
Do step 5. Meta AI asks once, and you can change it later in Meta AI under App connections.
The capture button stopped taking photos
While Sightline is linked, the glasses give it the capture button. To keep Meta's photo and video on the button, pick Meta camera under Sightline Settings, Glasses, Capture button. To hand everything back, use Shut down Sightline at the bottom of Settings.

Still stuck? In Sightline, use Settings, Report a problem with diagnostics on. It sends the connection log straight to Cameron, so he can see exactly where it stops.
