Standpoint Score8.2/10Not tested · research scoreHow this score works ↗

Not tested. This is a research score for the documented features, compatibility and ownership trade-offs discussed in this review, not a performance measurement.

Features & capability 30%9.0

Five-second heart sampling that matched a chest strap for Expert Reviews and Tom's Guide, a 50-hour rating most testers got close to, satellite SOS, 5G and a 40 m dive rating; DC Rainmaker still logged 11 to 14 second heart-rate gaps.

Compatibility & connectivity 20%7.8

iPhone 11 or later on iOS 27 only, satellite Messages and Find My need a carrier plan, 5G depends on select carriers, and GLONASS was dropped, though Canada is listed for every satellite feature.

Ownership & upkeep 20%7.6

$1,099 is unchanged from the Ultra 3 and Best Buy Canada hasn't cut the old model, satellite is free for only two years with no price after, the warranty is one year, and the Canadian AppleCare+ price wasn't published on the pages checked.

Setup & everyday use 15%8.0

Reviewers describe simple setup and two-day battery, but DC Rainmaker hit Readiness delays and crashes, several r/AppleWatch owners report the score stuck for a week, and the 49 mm case is a recurring comfort complaint.

Documentation & support clarity 15%7.9

Apple's Canadian specs and battery test conditions are detailed and the feature-availability page is clear, but Apple hasn't said whether the Ultra 4 now has hypertension alerts in Canada and Live Rewind and Siri Recap have no firm date.

The editorial verdict

From a tech standpoint.

Buy the Ultra 4 if you're on an original Ultra, an Ultra 2 or a Series watch and you want the longest battery and the best heart sensor Apple has shipped. Outside testers got about two days with the always-on screen and sleep tracking, and two of them found the heart sensor matched a chest strap on steady runs. Skip it if you own an Ultra 3: Gizmodo, XDA and TechRadar all say there isn't enough here to pay again. If you don't need satellite or a 40 m dive rating, the Series 12 at $549 has the same sensor and Readiness score for half the money. In Canada, don't bother hunting for a cheap Ultra 3; the big-box price hasn't dropped.

Reasons to consider it

  • Battery that finally clears two days: TechRadar got two days with the always-on display and sleep tracking on, Gizmodo charged every two to three days, and 9to5Mac's roughly 48-hour run included 90 minutes of workouts
  • A heart sensor that holds its own against a chest strap: Expert Reviews saw peak and average heart rate match a strap across workouts, and Tom's Guide called its strap comparison close to spot on
  • Faster top-ups: Apple says 15 minutes now buys up to 18 hours, up from 12 on the Ultra 3, which TechRadar put at roughly 30 percent in 15 to 20 minutes
  • Same $1,099 Canadian price as last year, with 5G, satellite SOS and a 40 m dive rating standard on every unit

Go in knowing

  • The case, screen, satellite and dive features are unchanged from the Ultra 3, and XDA calls it only a modest step over the Ultra 2 as well
  • Readiness needs seven nights of sleep data and a Sleep Focus schedule, DC Rainmaker saw delayed updates and crashes, and several r/AppleWatch owners report it stuck on 'two sleep sessions needed' for a week or more
  • DC Rainmaker found 11 to 14 second gaps in heart-rate data during rowing and intervals, so serious interval athletes may still want a strap
  • Live Rewind and Siri Recap, two of the headline Audio Intelligence features, are still promised for late 2026, and Apple's AppleCare+ price for the Ultra 4 in Canada wasn't published on the pages checked

01 / THE DETAILS

The Ultra 3 still costs $1,099.99 at Best Buy Canada, which makes this an easy call

Here's the oddest thing about buying an Ultra in Canada right now. On October 25, 2026, Best Buy Canada lists last year's Apple Watch Ultra 3 at $1,099.99 and the new Ultra 4 at $1,099.99. Same money. Apple.ca starts the Ultra 4 at $1,099 and Amazon.ca at $1,099.00, with the Titanium Milanese Loop at $1,249 everywhere. MacRumors reported Best Buy in the US cutting the Ultra 3 to US$649; that discount hasn't crossed the border in any listing checked here.

The Ultra 4 is Apple's big sports watch: a 49 mm titanium case, cellular and 5G on every unit, a 3,000-nit screen, a 100 m water rating and satellite SOS. Apple announced it on September 9, 2026; stores had it September 18. The changes are inside: a new S11 chip, a redesigned heart sensor Apple calls the Health Sensing System, and a battery rated at 50 hours instead of 42. There is still only one size, and it weighs 63 g, about four loonies more than a 46 mm aluminum Series 12.

This is a research review. Cameron hasn't used an Ultra 4; what follows comes from Apple's Canadian pages, outside reviews and owner threads. The question it answers is whether $1,099 buys anything a $549 Series 12 or a Garmin can't, and which headline features actually work in Canada. Start with what changed.

02 / THE DETAILS

What changed: the sensor, the chip and ten more hours. What didn't: anything you can see

Apple's spec pages put the differences in numbers. Background heart rate readings now happen every five seconds instead of every five minutes, and HRV readings as often as every five minutes instead of every two hours. The S11 chip replaces the S10. Battery goes from 42 to 50 hours, Low Power Mode from 72 to 84, and a 15-minute charge from 12 hours of use to 18. The Extended Workout mode rises to 25 hours with full GPS, which Apple says is 25 percent more than the Ultra 3. A new Readiness score and a rewritten step counter arrive with it.

What didn't change is everything on the outside. Gizmodo lists the case, the 1.98-inch screen, the Action button, the dive computer, satellite and 5G as carried over, and says the design is getting stale after four generations. DC Rainmaker notes one quiet drop: GLONASS is gone from the GPS constellation list, with no accuracy change in its testing. A new 10 W charging puck (model A3277) looks identical to the old 5 W one, and XDA says the fastest charging also needs a 20 W USB-C adapter that isn't in the box.

So who should not upgrade? Gizmodo says Ultra 3 owners probably don't need to. XDA goes further and says Ultra 2 owners should sit this one out too. TechRadar's verdict is the same: not enough to justify the jump from an Ultra 3. The upgrade case is for original Ultra and Series owners, or Fitbit and Garmin switchers. The next question is whether the 50-hour number is real.

03 / THE DETAILS

The 50-hour claim: who got there, who got a day and a half

Apple's own test, described on its Canadian battery page, is a 50-hour mix of 630 time checks, 190 notifications, 30 minutes of apps, two 60-minute workouts with Bluetooth music and 12 hours of sleep tracking, with cellular on for 10 hours. Most reviewers landed close to it anyway. TechRadar got two days with the always-on display and sleep tracking. Expert Reviews got about two days with roughly three hours of workouts a day. 9to5Mac, cited by MacRumors, went Sunday evening to Tuesday evening with 90 minutes of workouts and two nights of sleep tracking.

The dissenters matter too. XDA got 'well over a day and a half' before battery anxiety set in and called the 50-hour claim a bit of a stretch. Trusted Reviews averaged about two days before Low Power Mode and never reached three. For GPS workouts, DC Rainmaker's two tracked rides worked out to 18 hours 47 minutes and 18 hours 33 minutes of full-GPS life, right on Apple's 18-hour rating but nowhere near a Garmin. It also calls Max Extended Workout essentially Low Power Mode renamed: alerts and splits go off and on-screen heart rate becomes a five-minute average.

Owners on r/AppleWatch are split the same way. One long thread has Ultra 3 upgraders reporting anything from a small gain to roughly double, and several point out that watchOS 27 improved the Ultra 3's battery on its own. The practical read: train an hour a day and sleep with it, and you'll charge every second morning. If you run ultras or multi-day hikes, 18 hours of real GPS is the number to plan around, not 50. The sensor is the other half of the pitch.

04 / THE DETAILS

Heart rate every five seconds: how it did against a chest strap

Apple says the Health Sensing System is the most accurate heart-rate sensing in any wearable. That claim rests on a study Apple commissioned with over 1,000 participants against a Polar H10 strap. Gizmodo points out the comparison left out the newest Pixel and Galaxy watches, and DC Rainmaker argues the study only scored timestamps the watch chose to record, so skipped readings never counted against it.

The independent results are still good. Expert Reviews saw peak and average heart rate match a chest strap across its workouts, with the watch responding faster during HIIT than previous models. Tom's Guide ran 22 miles with the watch against a strap and an Oura Ring and described the readings as close to spot on. DC Rainmaker's workout files are the detailed ones: 11 and 12 second gaps on a trail run and a Peloton ride, a 14-second flatline while rowing, and gaps and spikes in track intervals. Its verdict was 'very good' and about even with the best rivals, not clearly ahead.

What that means on your wrist: for steady runs, rides and daily resting data, this is the best sensor Apple has made, and The Verge (per MacRumors) saw no battery penalty from the five-second sampling. For 400 m repeats or rowing, the displayed number updates only every five seconds and can lag or drop, so a strap is still the honest tool. Next, the feature that's supposed to make sense of all that data.

05 / THE DETAILS

Readiness: the free Oura-style score that owners keep saying is stuck

Readiness is a daily 0 to 10 score built from activity, training load, vitals and sleep, with four labels: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready and Go For It. It updates through the day, which CNET (per MacRumors) notes Oura's morning score doesn't, and it costs nothing, where Oura charges about US$7 a month for the data behind its number. Apple says it needs at least seven nights of sleep data before it shows anything, and DC Rainmaker says it also needs a Sleep Focus schedule turned on.

The early verdicts are mixed. Expert Reviews scored a 6 on a day its Oura Ring 5 gave 71, never saw a 10, and misses a history view; the score lives in the Fitness app, not Vitals. DC Rainmaker likes the all-day updates but hit a two-hour delay, brief null values and a few watch crashes while recording workouts, which Apple told it were being looked at. On r/AppleWatch, several separate owners report Readiness and Recovery HRV stuck on 'two sleep sessions needed' for a week or more while the Health app shows the data; a Sleep Focus schedule and a reset are the usual fixes.

Then there's what hasn't shipped. Apple's Canadian page says Live Rewind (a transcript of the last 15 seconds when you double-press the crown) and Siri Recap arrive in beta in late 2026, in English first. Siri AI is in beta with French 'coming later this year'. Sound Recognition and faster Shazam work now. A thread on r/apple also complains that the Ultra 4 page advertises strength training tracking while watchOS 27 still has no native set, rep and weight logging. Now the Canada-specific part.

06 / THE DETAILS

Satellite, 5G and the blood pressure alert: what actually works in Canada

Satellite is the Ultra's main edge over a Series 12, and Apple's watchOS feature-availability page lists Canada for Emergency SOS, Messages and Find My via satellite. Service runs on Globalstar and is free for two years once you activate the watch; after that Apple hasn't published a price. Messages and Find My via satellite also need a carrier plan, so SOS works without a plan but texting home from a trail doesn't. 5G is RedCap, the low-power flavour, and Apple's footnote says it's available only in select markets through select carriers, so check with yours.

Hypertension notifications are the messy one. Apple's Canadian press release said the feature would not be available on the Series 12 or Ultra 4 in Canada at launch, with clearance in process. Health Canada's licence for the feature (No. 114026) picked up new software identifiers dated September 28, 2026, per iPhone in Canada, and on October 15 a Series 12 owner in Quebec sent that outlet a screenshot of the alerts switched on. Apple's feature-availability page now lists Canada for hypertension notifications with no model caveat. Nothing from Apple names the Ultra 4 specifically, so check the Health app before you rely on it.

The rest of the health kit is cleared here: the ECG app, sleep apnea notifications and Blood Oxygen (wellness only) all list Canada. Live Translation supports English (Canada) and French (Canada). Live Rewind and Siri Recap will also need an Apple Intelligence iPhone, which Apple's release puts at iPhone 16 or later, excluding the 16e. So the Ultra 4 does nearly everything it promises in Canada, with one feature you should verify. The next question is whether something else does it for less.

07 / THE DETAILS

Series 12, Ultra 3, Fenix 9 Pro or Galaxy Watch Ultra2: where $1,099 lands

The closest rival is in Apple's own lineup. The Series 12 starts at $549 for the 42 mm GPS model and $679 with cellular, and it has the same S11 chip, the same five-second heart sensor and the same Readiness score. Tech Standpoint scored it 8.5. What you give up is a 24-hour battery rating instead of 50, a 2,000-nit screen instead of 3,000, no satellite, no dual-frequency GPS and a 50 m water rating instead of 100. DC Rainmaker's trail test found the Series 12 slightly less accurate than the Ultra 4 and a Fenix 9.

The Ultra 3 should be the value play and in Canada it isn't. Best Buy Canada lists it at $1,099.99 new, the same as the Ultra 4, with a marketplace seller at $979; Amazon.ca only shows renewed units above $1,100. Unless a real markdown appears, there's no reason to buy it. On the Android side, Samsung's Galaxy Watch Ultra2 47 mm LTE is $949.99 at Best Buy Canada, with marketplace listings near $697, but it needs an Android phone, so it only matters if you're switching.

If battery is the whole point, Garmin wins and it isn't close. The Fenix 9 Pro is $1,539.99 for the 43 and 47 mm at MEC.ca, or $1,679.99 with inReach satellite, and Garmin rates the 47 mm at 18 days as a smartwatch and 26 hours of multi-band GPS. Tech Standpoint scored it 7.9, held back by price and early bugs. The Forerunner 970 is about $1,099.99 at Canadian retailers such as Canex, with Walmart.ca showing $909.99 in search listings, and it scored 8.6 here. The Garmins are the better training instruments; the Ultra 4 is the better phone on your wrist. What happens after you've bought it?

08 / THE DETAILS

Living with it: a 15-day return, a one-year warranty and a two-year satellite clock

Apple's Canadian sales policy gives you 15 days from delivery to return an undamaged watch with its packaging and receipt, which is enough time to learn whether 49 mm works on your wrist. Size is the question r/AppleWatch asks most, and several owners who moved from an Ultra to a Series 12 describe the relief of a thinner watch. For other retailers, check the return policy before you buy. The warranty is one year of limited coverage, per Costco Canada's AppleCare+ listing, and AppleCare+ stretches that to two years. Apple's fees page lists a $99 accidental-damage charge for Ultra models, but a Canadian AppleCare+ price for the Ultra 4 wasn't on the pages checked.

Running costs are mostly optional. The satellite features are free for two years from activation and Apple hasn't said what comes after. Messages via satellite needs a carrier plan, and so does any cellular use. The Oceanic+ dive app needs a subscription for its full features. Replacement bands start at US$99 for the translucent Ocean Band, per Gizmodo. There's no charging adapter in the box, and XDA says the fastest charge needs a 20 W one.

Early software is where owners are spending their time. Beyond the Readiness delays, r/AppleWatch threads in October 2026 describe step counts dropping during elliptical workouts after Apple rewrote the pedometer, the watch locking on the wrist, and nightly wrist-temperature readings missing. Owners are waiting on watchOS 27.2 for fixes. DC Rainmaker adds that the touch-heavy wet-workout controls are hard with gloves. None of it is a hardware fault, but don't buy on a promised fix date. Who, then, is this for?

09 / THE DETAILS

Who should buy the Ultra 4, who should skip it, and what to buy instead

Buy it if you're on an original Ultra, an Ultra 2, or any Series watch three or more years old, you go places without cell signal, and a 49 mm case suits you. Reviewers agree: Tom's Guide calls it the best Apple Watch Ultra yet, Gizmodo gave it 4 out of 5 and an Editor's Choice, XDA gave it 8 out of 10, and DC Rainmaker called it a solid upgrade for earlier Ultra owners. The battery really does clear two days for most people and the heart sensor is the best Apple has made.

Skip it if you own an Ultra 3. Every review that compared them says the gains are internal and modest, and Best Buy Canada still prices the old one at $1,099.99, so there's no discount gap to exploit. Skip it too if you train by intervals and live by the heart-rate graph, because DC Rainmaker's gaps show a strap is still needed, or if hypertension alerts are the reason you're buying and you can't confirm them in the Health app first.

Buy something else if you don't need satellite or diving: the Series 12 at $549 has the same sensor and Readiness score at half the price. If you want a watch that lasts weeks, the Garmin Forerunner 970 at about $1,099.99 is the same money, and the Fenix 9 Pro with inReach at $1,679.99 adds satellite messaging on a titanium case. Our score reflects a very capable watch with a real battery gain, marked down for a design that hasn't moved, a Readiness feature that isn't finished and features still waiting on software.

Questions before checkout.

How much is the Apple Watch Ultra 4 in Canada?

It starts at $1,099 at apple.com/ca with the Alpine Loop, Trail Loop or Ocean Band, and $1,249 with the Titanium Milanese Loop. On October 25, 2026, Best Buy Canada listed it at $1,099.99 and Amazon.ca at $1,099.00, with open-box units at Best Buy from $934.99.

Is the Apple Watch Ultra 4 worth upgrading from the Ultra 3?

Most reviewers say no. Gizmodo, XDA and TechRadar all describe the changes as internal and modest: a new heart sensor, Readiness, and about ten more hours of battery. The case, screen, satellite and dive features are unchanged, and in Canada the Ultra 3 still lists at $1,099.99, so there's no cheap-old-model path either.

Does the Ultra 4 really last 50 hours on a charge?

Close, for light use. TechRadar got two days with the always-on screen and sleep tracking, Gizmodo charged every two to three days, and 9to5Mac went about 48 hours with 90 minutes of workouts. XDA got well over a day and a half and called 50 a stretch. Full GPS workouts ran about 18 and a half hours in DC Rainmaker's tests.

Do hypertension notifications work on the Ultra 4 in Canada?

Apple said they wouldn't be available on the Ultra 4 or Series 12 in Canada at launch while clearance was in process. Health Canada updated the feature's licence on September 28, 2026, and iPhone in Canada reported a Series 12 owner with the alerts enabled on October 15. Apple's availability page now lists Canada, but nothing names the Ultra 4 directly, so check the Health app.

Is satellite messaging on the Ultra 4 free in Canada?

Emergency SOS, Messages and Find My via satellite are free for two years from activation, and Apple's feature-availability page lists Canada for all three. Messages and Find My via satellite also need a carrier plan. Apple hasn't published what the service costs after the two years end, so budget for that uncertainty.

Should I buy the Ultra 4 or a Garmin Fenix 9 Pro?

Pick the Ultra 4 if you want the iPhone ecosystem, Apple Pay, calls and a watch you charge every second day. Pick the Fenix 9 Pro, $1,539.99 at MEC.ca or $1,679.99 with inReach, if you want weeks of battery, deeper training tools and offline maps. DC Rainmaker found their GPS accuracy very close on trails.
