The editorial verdict

The ownership case.

KR172 is a dealer-and-network proposition as much as a mower. Its area guidance usefully separates mowing frequency, while the absence of the KR173’s highlighted OAS should be reflected in expectations and pricing.

Reasons to consider it

  • Clear 48-hour versus 72-hour capacity guidance
  • No property-specific reference antenna in stated concept
  • Electronic height adjustment

Go in knowing

  • Network coverage must be confirmed
  • OAS is not listed as on KR173
  • Dealer quality is part of ownership

01 / THE DETAILS

The mowing interval changes the capacity

Kress publishes a recommended half-acre area when cutting every 48 hours and a larger 0.7-acre maximum on a 72-hour cycle. This is more useful than an unexplained single maximum because it shows the trade between coverage and frequency. An owner who wants frequent light cuts should plan around the recommended figure, then leave room for weather and family use rather than selecting the largest number available.

The KR172 uses Kress's correction network, avoiding a property-specific stationary reference antenna in the stated installation concept. That can reduce hardware around the house, but it makes coverage confirmation central to the purchase. A nearby dealer should assess the actual address and layout. Do not assume that cellular reception alone establishes every requirement for reliable corrected positioning.

02 / THE DETAILS

A deliberate step below the obstacle-equipped model

The KR173 prominently includes OAS obstacle avoidance; KR172's feature list does not make the same claim. That difference should be preserved in a comparison rather than assigning the higher model's capabilities to the whole family. A clean, open lawn may not need the additional system, while a garden with frequently moved furniture could justify investigating it. The owner still needs a safe mowing routine in either case.

Kress describes dead reckoning to bridge weak satellite reception. That is a useful supporting technique, but it should not be interpreted as unlimited operation beneath dense cover. We would test the longest shaded connection and watch how the mower returns to reliable positioning. The important outcome is consistent boundary behaviour and recovery, not merely whether the robot continues moving while reception is reduced.

03 / THE DETAILS

A modest machine with a strong installation dependency

The documented 20-volt, 4 Ah battery and electronic height adjustment make KR172 a conventional maintenance mower with connected control. Its published 40% slope limit should be assessed separately from the geometry at edges and connecting paths. A floating disc can help follow variations in the lawn, but we would still inspect cut consistency over depressions and raised roots.

The buying case against KR173 depends on whether the extra obstacle system and capacity solve meaningful problems. Against a self-installed RTK competitor, KR172's appeal may be the quality of the dealer's survey and ongoing service. We would insist on a complete installation quote and a clear answer about network and connectivity terms. Our field priorities are coverage within the selected mowing interval, reliable returns from shaded areas and the clarity of fault reporting. No documentation-only review can establish the actual response time of the dealer who will maintain the mower.

A practical acceptance test before relying on it

The KR172 dealer demonstration should use the recommended 48-hour scenario and the property's hardest satellite location. Request a written explanation of correction coverage and what support is available if the network or local reception becomes problematic. Then observe the machine around normal fixed obstacles without assuming the OAS features of KR173 are included. We would also test the owner's ability to adjust height and understand a stopped task through the app. A dealer-installed system should hand over an understandable routine, not leave the customer dependent on guesswork. The acceptance result is a complete supported installation that meets the required cutting interval with spare time.

05 / THE DETAILS

Setup, maintenance and the ownership decision

KR172 ownership is closely tied to the installation service. Ask the dealer to identify correction-network coverage, map creation responsibilities and connectivity terms before accepting a quote. The no-property-antenna proposition can be convenient, but a buyer should understand where correction data comes from and what happens when it is unavailable. A successful handover should include the difficult shaded route, not only the open lawn near the dock. Keep the dealer's installation notes and the serial-specific configuration so that future support starts from the actual system rather than a generic description of a Kress robot.

The half-acre recommended figure assumes a 48-hour cutting cycle, while the larger maximum uses 72 hours. Select the cycle that suits growth and desired appearance, then leave operating margin. A owner who needs the lawn free for substantial periods should not treat maximum capacity as the appropriate target. Electronic height adjustment can simplify seasonal changes, but the owner still needs to inspect the actual result over uneven ground. We would record the chosen setting alongside completion times so that a change in cutting demand is not confused with a sudden deterioration in battery performance.

KR172's feature list does not present OAS in the same way as KR173. That difference should inform lawn preparation and the decision to buy optional or higher-model capability. Keep loose objects out of the work area and do not assume the whole family has identical detection hardware. The floating disc and systematic route can help produce consistent maintenance, but blade condition remains central to the finish. Inspect and replace the correct blades and screws with power safely isolated. Use the manufacturer's hose-cleaning instructions for the IPX5 body rather than an aggressive wash around seals and electrical components.

The app and integrated 4G listing should be translated into clear ongoing terms. Ask which services are included, which require renewal and how access is recovered if the phone or account changes. If the dealer controls setup initially, establish the homeowner's ownership and remove unnecessary access. Anti-theft and location functions can assist monitoring without guaranteeing recovery. We have not assessed the service's privacy or security implementation. Safety also depends on the installation: protect hazardous edges, plan routes around vehicle use and keep people and animals outside active mowing areas according to the manual.

The Canadian manufacturer page provides a useful regional reference, but the practical repair relationship is with a particular dealer. Ask about battery replacement, collection service and turnaround during the busy mowing season. Confirm what support remains available if that dealer stops carrying the brand. Compare KR172 with KR173 on the actual need for obstacle sensing and extra capacity, not merely a promotion. A well-surveyed open lawn can make the simpler model economical. An uncertain correction signal or a cluttered route may demand a different installation plan, and a higher model number alone will not necessarily resolve either issue.

06 / THE DETAILS

Seasonal storage and return to work

A seasonal KR172 service appointment should include the stored battery's prescribed checks and confirmation that the mapped property and correction arrangement remain valid. Ask the dealer what the homeowner can inspect independently before spring. Keep the chosen 48-hour working scenario with the schedule record, rather than drifting toward a larger maximum-area assumption. Recheck the most shaded route and local controls during the first tasks. A dealer-supported installation is most useful when the owner also receives enough information to manage ordinary seasonal restarting confidently.
