The editorial verdict

The ownership case.

KR173 adds a useful obstacle-avoidance proposition to Kress’s network approach. Its recommended and maximum areas should not be conflated, and the final purchase should depend on a dealer proving the difficult parts of the property.

Reasons to consider it

  • OAS obstacle avoidance
  • Explicit capacity-by-interval figures
  • Electronic height and floating disc

Go in knowing

  • Maximum area assumes less frequent cutting
  • Correction-network dependency
  • Narrow deck needs an adequate schedule

01 / THE DETAILS

The three-quarter-acre title needs its schedule context

KR173 is marketed as a three-quarter-acre mower, while the Canadian technical table gives 0.7 acre for a 48-hour cutting cycle and 1.2 acres for a 72-hour cycle. Those figures are not interchangeable. The owner should choose the interval that suits growth and appearance, then decide whether the machine has enough spare time for interruptions. A larger maximum can be useful without being the correct design target.

The model's distinguishing addition over KR172 is the listed OAS obstacle-avoidance system. That may be valuable around furniture and other changing obstacles, but it does not replace clearing small hazards or separating people from mowing. We would assess both avoidance and the grass left around avoided objects. A system that never touches anything can still leave an inconvenient amount of trimming.

02 / THE DETAILS

Network RTK is a service relationship

Kress's shared correction infrastructure reduces the need for a stationary antenna installed specifically on the property. This is appealing when roof or pole mounting would be awkward. It also means the selling dealer should provide a clear coverage assessment and explain the ongoing service arrangement. Antenna-free is an installation description, not a statement that positioning has no external dependency.

Dead reckoning is described as maintaining routing during weak satellite conditions. The practical question is how well the system handles the particular route behind the house or beneath mature trees. We would observe entry, exit and return-to-dock behaviour over several days. A single successful pass does not establish consistent operation as foliage and satellite geometry change.

03 / THE DETAILS

A narrow deck with a structured working plan

The published cut is just under eight inches, with three blades and a floating disc. That suggests daily results will rely on planned routes and adequate operating time rather than sheer width. Electronic height adjustment is useful for tailoring the finish, but the physical cut needs inspection over uneven ground. The 40% slope limit also should not be confused with a specialist AWD climbing claim.

KR173 should be compared with KR174 on actual output requirements and cutting-system differences. Buying the larger model may be sensible for schedule margin, while a suitable KR173 can avoid unnecessary expense. Our first test would be a complete 48-hour routine with obstacles in normal positions, followed by a controlled change to the layout. We would record interventions, missed strips and battery cycles. The network and dealer model can be an advantage when well supported, but the quality of that local arrangement must be established rather than assumed from the brand.

04 / THE DETAILS

A practical acceptance test before relying on it

For KR173, compare ordinary coverage with and without a safe movable obstacle in a representative area. Measure both the avoidance margin and the residual grass rather than treating collision avoidance as the only outcome. Then confirm that the complete lawn finishes within the chosen 48-hour schedule. This makes the additional OAS system and the area guidance testable in practical terms. Ask the dealer to demonstrate recovery after a blocked connecting route, and record which interventions remain the owner's responsibility. The mower should earn its premium through reduced management work on this property, not merely through a larger set of features than KR172.

05 / THE DETAILS

Setup, maintenance and the ownership decision

KR173's OAS system should be incorporated into the site demonstration. Ask the dealer to show how ordinary obstacles affect the route and how much grass remains around them. Avoid interpreting successful non-contact navigation as proof that every low object is recognised. The owner still needs a clear lawn and a safe schedule. If the property is mostly open and permanent obstacles are already mapped, the additional system may have less value than on a frequently rearranged garden. The choice over KR172 should therefore reflect an observed workload rather than a general preference for more sensors.

The correction network remains central even with obstacle sensing. Verify coverage at the actual address and through the least favourable parts of the route. Dead reckoning is described as bridging weak satellite conditions; it is not evidence of indefinite operation beneath any canopy. We would observe repeated transitions and returns to the dock while the final installation is in place. Keep the mapping and coverage assessment with the service record. A dealer's initial confidence is useful, but a documented plan makes later troubleshooting and responsibility clearer if the same section repeatedly causes interruptions.

Use the 0.7-acre recommended 48-hour scenario as the starting point when frequent mowing is the goal. The 1.2-acre maximum assumes a different interval and should not silently replace it in a sales comparison. The narrow cutting width puts a premium on available working time and efficient routes. Electronic height control can simplify changes, while the floating disc still needs inspection for debris and blade wear. A poor cut can originate in the cutting assembly even when positioning is accurate. Keep a record of maintenance and settings so that support can distinguish those causes.

The listed hose-cleanable IPX5 body should be maintained according to the exact procedure, including safe isolation before underside work. Charging contacts, wheels and the station approach deserve routine attention as well as the blades. Ask for the correct battery and charger replacements rather than assuming another Mission model's components fit. Review app permissions, 4G terms and account transfer during setup. Monitoring and anti-theft tools are useful only when their alerts reach the right person, and no remote feature removes the need to prevent unsafe interaction with people, pets or vehicles along the mowing route.

Service quality is a substantial part of the KR173 proposition. Obtain installation, seasonal maintenance, transport and diagnostic costs separately so that the complete ownership budget is visible. Ask how the dealer handles a mower that loses useful network coverage or needs remapping after landscaping. Compare that offer with a self-installed competitor and with KR174's larger battery and cutting system. A smaller machine supported well can be a better purchase than a larger one whose repair route is unclear. The aim is dependable coverage within the intended interval, with OAS reducing meaningful interventions rather than becoming a feature that is rarely used.

06 / THE DETAILS

Seasonal storage and return to work

For KR173, include the OAS sensing surfaces and the floating cutting disc in the manual-approved seasonal inspection. Preserve the dealer's map and coverage notes, then compare the garden with that plan after winter landscaping changes. Follow the battery-storage procedure and verify current app access and service terms before resuming a multi-area schedule. The first observed runs should cover both ordinary obstacles and the hardest return route. This tests whether the complete supported system remains suitable, rather than merely whether the mower powers on successfully.
