The short answer

Neither the PS6 nor the next Xbox has a release date or a price. That's the only fully confirmed fact as of October 23, 2026.

The biggest news this week is about money. Fortune reported on October 20 that Microsoft's internal projections put its next console, Project Helix, at US$1,200 to $1,800, with a 2028 launch and a new Xbox handheld a year earlier. On the PlayStation side, Bloomberg reported back in February that Sony was considering pushing the PS6 to 2028 or even 2029 because memory prices have exploded.

If you're shopping now, here's the short version. Next-gen consoles look later and pricier than people expected a year ago. Waiting for them is a long and expensive bet.

PS6: what Sony has actually said

Confirmed: very little, and Sony says so itself. On its May 2026 earnings call, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said, as reported by VGC, "We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices." He said memory prices are expected to stay very high through Sony's fiscal year 2027, and that Sony is weighing "changing business models" for the next console. Sony also said it's spending more on the "next-generation platform", so the work is clearly under way.

The other official hint came from Mark Cerny, the PS5's lead architect. In an October 2025 PlayStation video with AMD, he walked through three technologies from a joint project called Amethyst: Neural Arrays for machine-learning upscaling, Radiance Cores for ray and path tracing, and Universal Compression to save memory bandwidth. He said he's excited about "bringing them to a future console in a few years' time." He didn't say PS6, and he said they only exist in simulation so far.

Not confirmed: the PS6 name, specs, a handheld, a date, or a price.

PS6: what's been reported

Timing. Bloomberg, a reliable outlet working from unnamed sources, reported on February 15, 2026 that Sony was considering a 2028 or 2029 launch instead of 2027. Moore's Law Is Dead, a YouTube leaker with a mixed record, has pushed back and says late 2027 is still on track. KeplerL2, an anonymous leaker who posts on the NeoGAF forum, has also hinted there's no delay. We'd weight Bloomberg and Sony's own caution above both.

Cost. On about October 18, KeplerL2 posted that the PS6's "RAM + NAND alone is over $680" in US dollars, as reported by VGChartz. That's component cost, not a retail price. It was a one-line forum reply with no numbers shown. Treat it as a signal of the memory squeeze, not a leak of a price tag.

Specs. Leaks call the main chip "Orion". Digital Foundry, a respected technical outlet, has discussed leaked figures suggesting the next Xbox chip has roughly 26% more compute units than the PS6 chip. Its Oliver Mackenzie said the PS6 looks like a smaller chip closer to the PS5 Pro's size, which should make it cheaper to build. These are discussions of leaks, not confirmed specs.

Handheld. In August 2025, Moore's Law Is Dead claimed Sony is working on a handheld codenamed "Canis", with four Zen 6C CPU cores and 16 RDNA 5 compute units on a 3nm chip. HotHardware called him a "contentious" leaker when it covered the claim. Sony hasn't announced any handheld beyond the PlayStation Portal streaming device.

Next Xbox: Project Helix, confirmed and reported

Confirmed: a lot more than Sony has shared. Microsoft named the next console Project Helix in March 2026. At GDC on March 11, Microsoft's Jason Ronald, its VP of Next Generation, said Helix is "designed to play your Xbox console and PC games." Microsoft's GDC summary says it runs on a custom AMD chip co-designed with the next DirectX and AMD's next FSR upscaling, and that alpha hardware goes to developers starting in 2027. Alpha kits in 2027 is one more reason a 2027 console launch looks unlikely.

AMD added a date hint. On its February 2026 earnings call, CEO Lisa Su said the chip for Microsoft's next Xbox is "progressing well to support a launch in 2027." That's AMD's readiness, not a Microsoft launch date.

Reported: Fortune's October 20 story says a first-party Xbox handheld is targeted for holiday 2027 and the Helix console for holiday 2028. It also says Microsoft internally projected a US$1,200 to $1,800 price, possibly with a subsidy. Fortune described clashes between the Windows and Xbox teams over the software. Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet replied on X that "Helix OS is being built on Windows" and that the account "misrepresents" the work and the teams' relationship. Note what he didn't dispute: the dates or the price.

Valve already showed where prices are going

Valve's Steam Machine is the one next-gen box you can actually buy. It shipped on June 29, 2026. According to GamingOnLinux's launch report, Canadian pricing is $1,509 for the 512GB model and $1,919 for 2TB, or US$1,049 and $1,349.

It's a small gaming PC running SteamOS, with a 6-core Zen 4 CPU and an RDNA 3 GPU, and Valve says it's about six times as powerful as the Steam Deck. It plays your Steam library. It doesn't play PlayStation or Xbox exclusives. For most people it's a PC alternative, not a console replacement. But the price tells you what memory and chip costs are doing to hardware in 2026.

What these could cost in Canada (our estimate)

There are no official Canadian prices for the PS6 or Helix. Here's how we'd think about it.

Canadian console prices have climbed fast. Sony raised the PS5 on April 2, 2026: the disc model went from $649.99 to $819.99, the Digital Edition from $579.99 to $749.99, the PS5 Pro from $959.99 to $1,099.99, and the PS Portal from $269.99 to $319.99. Nintendo moved the Switch 2 from $629.99 to $679.99 on September 1. Xbox has gone up too: VGChartz lists the US disc Series X at US$800, up from $500 at launch. We couldn't find an official current Canadian Xbox list price, so check shelf prices at Best Buy, Walmart, EB Games or Amazon.ca.

For Helix, one reference point helps. Valve priced the Steam Machine at C$1,509 against US$1,049, a ratio of about 1.44. Using that same ratio on Fortune's US$1,200 to $1,800 range gives roughly C$1,730 to C$2,590 before tax. That's our arithmetic on a reported internal projection, not a price.

For PS6, there's no credible reported retail price at all. Given Kepler's component claim and Sony's own warnings, we wouldn't plan on one below what a PS5 Pro costs today. That's a guess, and we're labelling it as one.

Will your games carry over?

Xbox is the clearer bet. Microsoft has officially said Helix plays your Xbox console games. It hasn't said whether every Series X game works on day one. It also says Helix plays PC games, though it hasn't explained which stores or how.

Sony hasn't said anything official about PS6 backward compatibility. Leaks say the handheld and the PS6 would run PS4 and PS5 games. Sony carried most PS4 games over to the PS5, so it's a reasonable hope, not a promise.

Should you buy a console now or wait?

If you want to play this year, buy now. The earliest reported date for new Xbox hardware is a handheld in holiday 2027. The Helix console and the PS6 look like 2028 or later, at prices likely above anything on shelves today.

PS5 Pro: the best way to play PlayStation games right now, but at $1,099.99 it's a lot. Get it if you have a good 4K TV and play a lot of big releases. Read our PS5 Pro review: Sony PlayStation 5 Pro review

Switch 2: the safest buy, because it's a separate ecosystem that next-gen PlayStation and Xbox won't replace. Nintendo Switch 2 review

Xbox Series X: still fine if you live in Game Pass and want your library to move to Helix later. Xbox Series X review

Steam Deck OLED: if Helix's PC game support appeals to you, a Steam Deck gets you into PC gaming for far less than a Steam Machine. Valve Steam Deck OLED review

The bottom line

From a tech standpoint.

The useful fact here isn't a spec. It's that memory prices have broken the old console math. Sony won't commit to a date or price. Microsoft's own reported numbers start at US$1,200. Valve's box costs C$1,509.

So don't hold off on a console you'd enjoy today for one that might arrive in 2028 at twice the price. If you're buying, buy for the games you want now. We'll update this page when Sony or Microsoft confirm anything real.
